Where to live ?
I've been thinking about living off-grid for awhile. Airstreams are one option to affordable housing and another are these microhomes built on trailers. Can anyone here come up with areas in the country where these are allowed? Most states/counties prohibit "trailer" living unless they're in a designated area/park. Thinking about buying some land, but I've read its not that easy just to haul your house on it. Where is it possible to set up house?

Most suburban and urban counties have lots of restrictions on living on travel trailers, and many restrict "mobile home" type trailer houses that aren't intended to move once set up.
Most RURAL counties aren't all that picky about what you do with your land, with all the good and bad that might entail.

There are plenty of trailers of all makes and models sitting on private land in south Georgia. I make it a point to watch for Airstreams as I am driving through rural areas. In parts of Georgia and other Southern states, rural may only be 30 minutes from sizable towns.

To add to Aviator's comment, a southern or southwestern state would be a good starting point since people describe Airstreams as "3 season" trailers, it's hard to keep them warm in real winters.

There would be little if any legal problems in rural Tennessee, at least in the area where I live. (Fentress County)

We have a farm in Giles County TN. A mile from our place two couples have purchased a few acres and have set up two Motorhome pads with full connections. One has a fenced in yard. Both are fixed up quite nicely. One or the other will be parked there during part of the year. The other times I assume they are having fun traveling the country or staying at their other part time location.

Very cool concept! It's a great way to down size and a shinny Airstream would look cool next to it (guest room)!

The Deal
Southern States along the Gulf Coast!
Make a no cash trade for (labor for rent) and
ya can get a full hookup - elect+water+sewer.
Ownership of a commercial grade weedeater could
sweeten or swing a deal in your favor. That is, if you
are willing to work for the thing. You'll know the place
when ya see it - an abundance of weeds...huh :-)
Just an idea.

I've never set up a trailer on a lot there, but there's a lot of trailers scattered on private lots east and north part of Apache Junction, AZ. LOTS! Quite a few for sale for not a lot of $.
