We found our old spot from a week ago at EB State Park and drove into town. We dropped off a sweater for dry cleaning at Nu Way Cleaners and then walked up to the local post office. We discovered it was built in 1939 out of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a program of Roosevelt's New Deal. While the post office building also served as a local fallout shelter, we found the interior to be especially memorable; we full-timers typically look for the local post office and T or C's is something of which the town can be proud. It houses a mural painted by Boris Deutsch - a 5'x12' oil on canvas. "The Indian Bear Dance" was installed in 1940 under one of the federal arts programs using artists during the Great Depression (1929-1943); works like this came to be known as WPA Art. Deutsch had originally depicted the Native American chief dancing out of the path of a AT&SF railway locomotive but later inserted a mountain, deciding to instead represent the spirit of southwestern Native American rituals.
We took to the backstreets south of Main Avenue and Broadway Street to find the many other hot springs in town. The crumbling sidewalks are further historical evidence of WPA's imprint on T or C. The neighborhood has its desert character and the locals like it that way. We bumped into a couple who owned a 1969, I believe it was, Airstream Land Yacht. Steve and Jane moved down from Albuquerque to small-town life. Steve was taking his time refurbishing his trailer and uses it to boondock in the local mountains.
We walked farther down the neighborhood to the La Paloma Hot Springs and Spa. It's not as polished as Riverbend but we were just in for a 30-minute soak. The rooms are smaller and have rock-bottomed tubs. I can see why folks come from great distances just to spend a few days or a week to go "tubbin'" - the hot mineral waters really do soak away any stress and remind the lot of us how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy leisure time...the simple things in life.

Dam Site Resort & Marina
We were coming back from our walk around the EB campground when we came up to a couple looking over a nest up a tree next to our trailer. Cindy and Mike are full-timers and have wintered in T or C four years. They suggested we take a drive to the south end of Elephant Butte Reservoir beyond the dam and our view of the water. We took a short drive outside Elephant Butte and found a windy road back down to the water...and found the perfect spot away from all the other campers. We found a manager for the Dam Site Resort and Marina and learned full hookups are $30/night but dry camping on the shore is only $10/night. There is drinking water and a dump nearby but I'm assuming this campground isn't known to most RV campers who frequent the state parks. I did use a filter to brighten up the area but the seclusion alone was enough for us. It was exactly what we wanted: a quiet spot to contemplate our soon to be completed winter journey and get ready to hit the grind for three months as convenience store clerks outside Bryce Canyon in a week and a half.

The shadows are growing, the grass is bent, and there's a ripple on the water. Time moves on far too quickly...but we're sure as heck trying to slow it down.

Love the old post office!
Sometimes you come upon an old Mercantile or General Store with the cage in the corner...equally cool.

Thanks TN. No, I haven't compiled enough experiences to make a video. We hope to work for three months to build back up our savings and then go explore through the summer and early fall. We recently inquired about working a sugar beet harvest and were hired to help in eastern Montana. We did some research and found it's a popular way for full-timers to make good money over a roughly two-week period of work in the agricultural sector. We have some time to get in shape so we can work 12-hour shifts two weeks straight. Hopefully we'll have enough new experiences to look back upon and make a video...we'll see.
Take care out there.

Started a new Instagram account
This ol' dog learned a new trick yesterday: I started up on Instagram. I don't have a really good smartphone but found the Flume app for viewing and uploading photos on IG using my MacBook Pro laptop. If anybody is interested in straight photography and no politics, you can find me at @airstreambasecamp. I am always interested in seeing others' experiences on the road too, and IG is a great place to follow others.
Hope to see you out there!
Jeff

There is something in the air of small towns I just love. I simply go for a walk to see if it's okay we stay longer than the posted 14 day limit and happen to strike up a conversation with a contractor, Ben, who was working on reviving the resort's old casitas. A couple hours later I'm at the helm of his sailboat staring down whitecaps and lake spray. Okay, maybe it wasn't Master and Commander but it sure was relaxing to be out on the water with a new friend.
Really loving T or C.

Another find in town: Me Gusta World Street Food Truck. It's open late afternoons into evenings (closed T and W) and located behind the T or C Brewing Company on N Broadway Street. You can either eat outdoors on tables behind the truck or take your food into the brewery - a very nice, relaxing atmosphere.

What Full-timing means to me…
Not long after recovering from quadruple by-pass open-heart surgery in late 2011, I decided to walk an hour every night, no matter the weather. At first, it was doing laps over and over in my apartment complex’s small parking lot. I can still picture in my mind the monotony of walking over asphalt speed bumps, past parked cars under car ports and telephone lines late at night… but I was getting stronger. Then I started walking under the lights around the sports complex in Tustin, California. Still, my thoughts and plans were always grounded in suburbia.
Then we saw an opportunity and jumped 3.5 years ago. Yesterday I walked my laps above Elephant Butte Reservoir located outside Truth or Consequences, New Mexico - a town whose location I had no idea of up to a few weeks ago. I smile and say hello to locals and tourists alike. During that hour of walking I thought back to my laps round and round in a parking lot located within the metropolitan area of my entire life up to that point.
Aside from good health, opportunity is the most valuable commodity a person can have...that pursuit of happiness. Opportunity is what feeds dreams; without it, one is just trying to survive. I now walk in a dream come true.
