First winter in 23 FB Airstream

Just finishing skirting with 2" insulation board around the bottom of my 23 FB Airstream. Curious about any recommendations, tips, etc? Do I need to get a monitoring thermometer? I have the internal heater on auto, fan on auto. We are in Montana. Thanks

Don't forget to protect your water supply and waste hose from freezing too.

Cold weather living in AS

Moisture is big concern. Make sure you are very careful about how much humidity you add to interior of AS due to showering, shaving, dish washing, etc. Get a dehumidifier and empty it often. Open the shower vent and leave it open to get fresh air into AS. Monitor the area under your bedroom mattress. Mold can start there. Sweating windows are a sure sign of too much humidity in AS. AS's are not the best cold weather trailer. You can do it, but it is going to take work to make sure no problems. Frozen dump valves. Frozen fresh water supply hose. When it gets really cold propane has problems. The furnace has to be run to keep plumbing inside the AS from freezing. Same with the black/gray tanks. Where you're at the furnace is going to get a serious workout. Good luck and keep us posted. I will check back in mid-January to see how it's going.

I like to run fresh water out of the tank and with the pump instead of buying a super expensive hose that can still freeze. Then again I am only doing weekends, so if full time I would probably invest in the heated hose.

Might heat tape your dump valves for the really cold days. Just don’t wrap it over itself. Or just buy and use antifreeze in the tanks frequently.

Throw a pillow under the mattresses when not used.

Don’t stuff closets or other storage spaces full with things like clothes. It will causes mold.

Did you get roof vents over the fantastic fans? Very needed for us in the PNwet to make them useful, but probably less so on the dry country.

Buy an extra sail switch for your furnace. It’s cheap and easy to replace, but only if you have one on hand.

On days above 46 degrees run the heat pump.

The skirting you installed will help keep temps under the trailer reasonable. I don't think you would need anything else under there to keep Dr. Freeze away. Propane furnace will warm up the crawl-space.

A desiccant-type dehumidifier will blow warmish air vs. a compressor-type which blows coolish air except when defrosting. IIRC, a desiccant works better in lower temps.

Pieces of Reflectix on the windows (behind the curtain) make a huge difference in temps near the windows and heat loss/gain. These get rolled and wrapped with Velcro straps, then stowed on the shelf in the back of the closet. You will need a dehumidifier if you go this route.

We use square pillows for the fantastic fans.

A piece of cardboard with Refectix wrapped in aluminum duct tape fits into the skylight. Small tab on one end to pull out of the hole.
