a reverse osmosis system is excellent at removing bacterial products

Best in-line filters/ counter filters, etc?

All advice is appreciated to help get my family safe drinking water.
We only use bottled water. Leaves no doubt.

When I went down to Mexico for 6 months, I used the water cooler sized jugs to fill my holding tanks. It took about 6-7 jugs every 2-3 weeks. It was easy to get a local water shop to deliver the jugs and it was cheap.
I used the trailer water for everything, cooking, cleaning, washup, washroom, etc.
So, the water was never standing.
I got the idea from the old Airstream caravans, and that my vintage 1976 says the water filling spout is designed for water jugs.
It worked great!

We have been traveling full-time since July 2016 in "Beauty," our 2001 30’ Airstream trailer. 72,000+ miles, 500+ campgrounds, 2800+ days on the road, and 49 States/6 Canadian Provinces so far. Here is an article about water, water filtering, and water conservation in a RV that you might find helpful.

People used chlorox in their water tank for years to kill bugs 🐛 and not too many died. That was before bottled water. Seems that the new model of people are much weaker.

The Travel Berkey Water Filter System is our go to on the road. The filters are good for 3000+ gallons. Here is an Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FMUYU6I

Another solution

WeI don’t drink water from the tap at home or from our RV tank. We use water from machines at Walmart, Safeway, or other sources whose water treatment we trust. We refill our own bottles from Primo or similar machines which take the city water and run it through a carbon filter, reverse osmosis, and UV light. I believe there is another step but can’t remember it right now. The water tastes good and to date we are free from gall and kidney stones which seem to be a common complaint in our drinking water area. You can find these refill machine all over the US and Canada. The cheapest is 25c a gallon and the most we’ve paid was about a US dollar a gallon in Canada.
We take our empties grocery shopping with us and fill them in the store. We keep a nice dispenser on our RV counter, and use a drinking water service at our home.

I admit, I'm a water snob. I suffered the same dilemma as you. I originally used the Zero Water filter pitchers, but replacement filters became expensive. I understand countertop space is limited, but I eventually went with this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNPMRFXS

I own two of these systems (one for home and one for my Airstream). I am not a sponsor. The UV feature kills bacteria, and the RO system removes harmful chemicals, metals, etc. Go RO if you want the best water from any source.

This eliminates plastic waste from water bottles and from testing is FAR superior to bottled water. It fills the glass pitcher in about 5 minutes.

Couple of good things about that system. Glass carafe, and reminerilization filter to add back calcium and magnesium which are filtered out by the RO.

You know, everyone has an opinion on this one. You can go as expensive and involved in filtration to insure there is not any chance of the water having any contamination, or like several have said here; you can use your common sense and just get an inline filter with a filtration level your comfortable.

We filter our water from our hose when filling our fresh water tank, and have another inline under the kitchen sink in our water line. 2 filters! Easy to install and change when needed. We also carry bottled water in our truck for use while camping.

Growing up, like others here, we drank from streams and creeks many times as did most folks who lived in the country or camped a lot; don't remember anyone ever getting sick. Drank from a well for 20 years without filtration when I lived in MT. Sent in the water for analysis to UofM; came back as excellent water.

Didn't have filtration type systems in the 50's and 60's that folks used while camping...least we didn't; and never saw anyone else using a filtration system, but again, we drank from streams and creeks many times. Today, with all the "information" available on line, folks can scare themselves to death on this topic! (and other topics of course!) I see folks with very complicated, big filtration systems with 2 or more large filters...some home built with wooden or metal frames...nothing wrong with that, but I am happy with inline filters on the hose to fill the fresh water tank and also use one in line under my kitchen gally sink.

Probably depends where you camp. Been camping for 65 years now and often our brood would get sick for 24 hrs until our system got used to the new water.

Now I'm not too keen to submit my system to this bootcamp method of adaptation (if you tried this in some countries you wouldn't live to tell the tale), so when in the US and Canada, we fill up at the Walmart Primo fountain, and in a place like Mexico it's the inline filters to fill the tank and the Acuva system in the galley, with its faucet, for drinking and cooking.

Came here to say this.

We paired ours with a frizzlife .5 micron inline water filter vice the acuva filter - so much easier to change them out.
