Ceiling ducts pushing out hot and cold air while furnace is on

Is it normal for the ceiling ducts to push out cold air while we have the furnace on? It does push out hot air as well, but then all of a sudden it will start to push out cold air a few minutes later.

We have one zone on furnace with the fan set to auto, and the other zone on auto with the fan set to auto as well. We are winter camping so it is not very fun when the ceiling ducts push out cold air. It makes it hard for the AS to maintain the temp we want. It seems like the hvac system is working against itself when we want to warm up the AS. This is only our second day using the AS, so we are all new to this.

You are using the heat pumps on the roof, not your furnace. What is the temp outside? Once it gets in the low 40s, they don’t work. Your ‘auto’ setting should revert to the propane furnace at that point. Perhaps yours is right on the edge temp wise and keeps trying. Set your the thermostats to the furnace setting instead of auto. Nice hot air will come out your vents that are closer to the floor.

Yes, it is normal. If plugged into shore power, the fan will automatically startup and circulate air while the furnace is on. Try turning the fan off. I upgraded my thermostat to the MicroAir version for bluetooth and Wi-Fi, I can’t remember if the Dometic allows you to turn the fan off. Another option is to turn on the heat pump in zone 2 while the furnace is on zone 1. Just make sure to set the heat pump low enough ensuring the furnace will still engage. The heat pump won’t keep your tanks from freezing.

If you only want the furnace (floor vents) to run and give you warm air, set the zone with furnace as an option, to furnace and fan in auto. Set the other zone to off, so nothing on your roof comes on and nothing out of your ceiling vents. I believe you are correct in that your furnace is heating your space, but once to setpoint, is triggering other zone to cool it down.
I like my roof units for AC, but don't care much for the heat pump feature. When on shore power, we run a Vornado space heater.

Like “Stuart’s Dad” said. Leave the roof AC/Heat Pumps off if you are using the Furnace. You’re main problem is using the AUTO selection for your roof units (not FAN AUTO, I mean the operation setting). With AUTO operation selected, the roof units will cycle back and forth between Heat and Cool continually (the units seem to overshoot the cool, then reverse and overshoot the heat—back and forth continuously). Just stick with HP or COOL for rooftops and you’ll be fine.

Heat pump is a reverse function of the air conditioner and will heat only about 25 degrees over the outside temperature, and is effective only to outside temperatures of about 45 degrees, then it get less effective. It also puts the warm air on the ceiling, it works -it takes the chill off. The furnace actually heats from the floor, warms the belly pan to help from freezing your pipes and is pretty effective in lower temperatures. With the warm air being emitted at your feet, it rises and heats the entire trailer.

We've discovered the furnace is much more effective if you simply shut off the overhead heat pump and use furnace only to heat. Set zone 1 to off and stoke up that furnace on zone 2.
