A Leap of Faith...

It’s taken me almost 15 months to finish Michael Pollan’s non-fiction book, A Place of My Own but I’ve been busy. The book is about his undertaking the construction of a reading hut in the rear of his property. While I didn’t have a hand in the making of our Airstream, I could relate to Pollan's journey; all new owners must read, study, and implement their newly acquired knowledge to make their home on wheels work for them. I notice quite a few new Airstream owners chiming in on their newfound dream machine and so Pollan’s closing remarks are for them, along with the many prospective owners to be:

“‘First we shape our buildings,’ Winston Churchill famously remarked, ‘and thereafter our buildings shape us.'

So this was the house for the self that stood a little apart and at an angle, the self that thought a good place to spend the day was between two walls of books in front of a big window overlooking life. The part of me that was willing to wager something worthwhile could come of being alone in the woods with one’s thoughts, in a place of one’s own, of one’s own making. As for the story that this house hinted at, the first part of it you know already, the part about its making; the next wouldn’t begin until tomorrow, on move-in day, a morning that from here held the bright promise of all beginnings, of departure, of once upon a time.”

Time to get started.

Beautiful.

I love.... "First we shape our buildings, and thereafter our buildings shape us".

Travel safely,

Maggie

Wonderful post. I have enjoyed Michael Pollan's writing, but have not read the quoted book as of yet. Thank you for sharing.

As my new journey in life awaits me (I am permanently moving into my AS) I will be sure to read his book. Thank you.
