There's not as much contamination as you fear. If you dump the black, follow with the gray, and rinse with the water spigot, there's not much junk remaining. I leave the hose on the ground while I hook up, then stow it and drive away.
Every hose leak I've ever had was at the connector. The wire coil in the hose never seals well enough to the smooth round plastic.
