Covering Airstream Motorhome

I now you are not supposed to cover Airstreams. I can't find any "indoor storage units for RV's. I was wondering. If I bought an RV cover larger than our Airstream and built a frame out aluminum beams so the cover doesn't touch the Airstream would that work? We have a long driveway where it would fit. We wanted to build a covered carport to store it, but the city of Modesto requires that we build it 27 feet from the street gutter, so that's out! So I thought if we built a frame to go under the extra large RV cover it would keep the cover from touching the Airstream. Since it's removable the city wouldn't be able to make us move it. Any input will be appreciated.

The only problem I see is if you get a wind storm. Anything that light will lift up and most certainly cause more damage than without the cover. That will be one big sail! I just can't think of another way to cover it. Maybe you can rent a barn in the area. Safer and protected.

Really understand your desire to protect your unit. I guess the concern regarding using a cover on an AS has to do with the risk of damaging the clear coat and underlying metal via cloth on metal friction. Your idea is a creative idea as long as you address Turk123's concerns about wind storms make sense. It would be most unfortunate if you eliminated friction risk and replaced it with failing aluminum frame risk. Maybe a good polishing combined with UV reflective window covers and RV tire covers is a route you should consider. If you go with no cover - frame or otherwise, I recommend that you treat your unit's seams and rivet heads with Corrosion-X (http://www.corrosionx.com/corrosionx.html) so as to help protect against aluminum filiform corrosion that may result from prolonged weather exposure. Good luck.
