I sold the house this summer in preparation for retirement, and am now renting. I have always shied away from using a cover on my Airstream because of the uniform advice that covers scratch the aluminum surface. I have no doubt that this is true, because it takes very little abrasion to cause scratches.

Incidentally, our Airstream club will have a luncheon in Vermont on December 15. If you are interested in meeting fellow Airstream owners, most of whom live in Vermont, please private message me, and I will give you the information.
Thanks MaineStreamer! Super! Would love to connect with folks in the Northeast club. I sent you a message.

So which storage yard with cover do you use? I’m looking for one before hail season. I’m in southeast Aurora. Colorado.

Does anyone actually rent space for an RV? I'd like to hear how they did it.

I'm in a very nice covered, secure facility. Cement floors, wash and dump stations, and a very secure gate.
I wish it was less expensive, but I've been there 10 years and can't find better.

A few years back, I had the same thought. Called a few airfields and hanger operations. All stated that due to new regulations, they couldn’t allow parking.

We live in a HOA type community on the East edge of the Phoenix urban sprawl where we are only allowed to bring the RV into the sub division to load/unload - no overnight parking. So the closest suitable storage is 9.6 miles away.

It costs around $3,500 per year to store our 31' Classic, our 23D International Serenity and our 10' Aluma Trailer for the Polaris UTV under roof with about 6 amps of 120 Vac power for each Airstream trailer. Probably 50 cameras, concertenna wire on top of the 10' walls, pass code steel security gates, sewer dump station, large dumpster and access to two wash bays are included. The manager lives on site as well.

If I were to buy a vacant lot, build a building with a perimeter fence and concrete floor in the building, pave the access road and bring in utilities, the insurance, property taxes, electricity, water and sewer bills and alarm monitoring service costs could exceed the rental fee above plus tying up the capital expenditure for the building.

The storage roof keeps the sun off of the trailers when they are there, but the 110+ heat permmeates the area. So we leave three five gallon open topped buckets of water in each trailer to keep the humidity level up and prevent cracking of the Hickory in the Classic or the whatever wood in the 23D.

I doubt that propane tanks were the issue as the planes are usually full of the more volitle aviation gasoline. The owner/pilots have been vetted for security access and typically are the only ones allowed past the gate onto the airport tarmac going to hangers.

In other words, more tightly controlled access after 911.

I was told it was a security issue...post 9/11. Nothing is supposed to be stored that is not an aircraft. I’m certain that there are some small airfields that have hangers with stuff stored in them. I bet there are some farmers with crop dusters stored with other “items”.
