Completed Airstream Garage

It’s been a long time coming, but our Airstream garage is finally finished. We call it the Sparkle Barn which is a name we stole from a mid century furniture consignment store nearby.

Garage has gas heat, 50A electrical, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi inside. Has 3 garage doors, the main door is 14’ wide, 11.5’ high, and two 8’ x 10’ glass doors that open onto the patio. Overhead clearance is actually 10’ 9” due to the complexity of the multiple roll up doors.

Shape of the building is a bit odd as one wall follows the property line and the other wall runs parallel to the back of the house so the whole thing tapers from about 20’ to 10’ and is ~40’ long.

I love the Sparkle Barn. I keep mine in a hangar. My shrine to all things that leak.

It looks great. We’re in the process of building a new house and I’m thinking of building a double garage that can store my truck on one side and my Airstream on the other side. It’s always nice to see what others have done.

I need to move...

Us folks in the near arctic can only dream about overhead glass doors that open onto a fine patio like that. Beautiful! Looks very well thought out and executed for the purpose.

Being a design/build guy, I can’t help but wonder what your design intent for the two side garage doors were? Was this supposed to be a multi car garage before the Airstream moved in? Nice work. Just curious with all the added complexity of the additional side overhead doors.

Dang, I want one!! Nice setup with the added flexibility for use and resale. I have to settle for behind the shop parking lot. Trying to get the building association to let me put a cover over it, but..... not yet.

NICE !
A really unusual structure.
Do you have any photos of it under construction, that you care to share?
I'm curious about the structural framing details and materials applied to the walls.

ps:
In my many years of building, I've never seen OH doors that overlap like that. Excellent planning.

Very nice garage! Especially dealing with the property line and making it work to suit your needs. Well done!

The glass roll up doors onto the patio were the original intent. You can’t get a vehicle onto the patio. Main purpose is to turn the garage into an indoor/outdoor space for parties and whatnot. With all of the hookups, the Airstream can be used as a guest house + outdoor-ish prep kitchen as well.

The driveway out to the street is around 50 feet long with 30 ft on our property due to setbacks and the other 20 feet is through the city right of way. So, I can easily pull the Airstream out and have full use of the open space of the garage for parties as well.

I have a few. It’s actually a pole structure that Spane Buildings here in Washington state built, but designed by our architect that did our home remodel. It’s a very low pitched metal roof to maintain height restrictions. Hardie Plank on the outside and T1-11 on the inside. Fiberglass in the walls and spray foam in the ceiling (to get as much clearance as possible while maintaining R value).

The glass doors (primarily the east one) were supposed to roll up over the large main door to get a full 11’ 6” clearance, but they weren’t able to do that because of the angle that one of the large door tracks comes in at. So, that was a bit disappointing, but they are as close together as they can be.

The garage door installer said it was a first for him as well. As I noted in another reply, the install didn’t go perfectly as planned but I’m still pretty happy with what they were able to pull off. One of the glass doors comes within 1/8” of the bottom of the large door track as it rolls up.
