Power Jack not working

The 30 amp fuse was bad so it was replaced. Now the jack light works, but the power jack still doesn't work. I believe the fuse blew because the wire from the battery had been crushed by the propane tank cover when it was put on and tightened. The wire has been wrapped with electrical tape. A multimeter shows power going into the jack motor. Any hints?

A typical problem is bad ground since this thing gets its ground through the base plate to the A-frame. Gets rusty and will conduct enough for light but not for motor. Got to disassemble and clean/lubricate.

If it was an open ground the light would not light. Wooden hurt to tighten the 3 bolts that mount the jack to the tongue.

If it is not blowing the fuse now it is not a locked rotor in the motor. I would open the jack and test for voltage going into the limit switch assembly. If you do not find voltage there the wire leading to the jack is open. If there is voltage to the switches apply voltage directly to the motor leads bypassing the limit switches. Do this with both polarities to the motor to make sure the jack is just not jammed against one of the stops.

If the motor works and you had voltage to the limit switched set the jack shaft with the hand tool originally supplied with the jack to make sure the shaft is at least 1 1/2 turns off the limit of the lead screw in the shaft. If the shaft is set correctly try the motor again.

If the motor did not work when test as a stand alone the motor has opened.

We removed the jack and filed down the surfaces to make a ground contact. Still not working. Would like to try and power directly to the motor. I don't know what a 'limit switch' is. Is that the up and down switch?

When you open the motor up you will find 2 switches. They are the limit switches. One reacts to jack extension and the other to retraction. They protect the motor and fuse from overload.

You should be able to distinguish the wire feeding the motor. Some motors may ground directly to the jack metal frame and some may have a ground wire fastened to the jack metal frame.

The top end of the lead screw for the jack should have a slot at the top that is used to manually use the jack when the motor fails in the field. That is the adjustment I mentioned to set the limit on the lead screw. You should not have to readjust the lead screw if the jack was working before this problem as it was set at the factory.

If the prior responses aren't sufficient or unclear, you might want to try finding a video clip on YouTube for a visual walk through all the issues/items mentioned. Enter "electric tongue jack troubleshooting" and you will be surprised by with the lengthy list generated.

When we had a similar issue, it turned out to be a bad toggle switch, which was an easy fix. Joe

Ive had to replace my toggle switch due to corrosion twice in the last 5 years. After the last time I now have a nice water proof cover that I use while storing or sitting.

Thanks everybody. I have an appointment to fix with an Airstream dealer. Glad I bought the 7 year extended warranty plan. Seems like after three years problems start. Power Jack won't work, dead bolt won't work, steps are broken, drawer next to door under seat is falling apart, converter wen't bad.

rucos - about that water proof cover on your jack. Did you buy it? If yes, where? Thanks!

rucos - never mind - I just went to Amazon and bought an awesome LCI jack cover that does everything except tuck me in at night.
