Jack Cover

Recently, at a park in Key West, I noticed several SOB-s with a curved propane tank cover and a 5-gallon bucket for the jack cover.
I do not like the cloth cover I had and was impressed with that jack cover. Of course, our propane tank covers won't allow a curved 5-gallon bucket.
So, I bought a recycle bin <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KDISFQ...t_details&th=1 >. I trimmed the lip off the back edge of the bin and drilled a new hole on one side (came with one hole). Used a bungee cord to secure it to the trailer.

Wondering why a jack built to be exposed to the elements needs a cover...

We use a Clever Cover and love it. Protecting the jack is nice, but what really makes it very worthwhile IMHO are the hooks to hang your safety chains and the protection for your electrical plug.

GR8 Question: While built to be outdoors, plastic degrades in the sun. I would rather degrade the bin than the jack.

Glad you like the Clever Cover you. Cost: $42 vs $7 (bin + bungee cord).

I have an older style H & H jack. On the previous jack, the cover actually leaked water and ruined the jack motor over the winter. I replaced the motor head with a spare one I had as a backup. When I stow the trailer I use a square plastic bucket over the jack. The square bucket originally contained cat litter - repurposed.

Well, yes, but does your bin help protect your safety chains or electrical plug? And can you drive down the road with it on?

I feel like the Clever Cover was a pretty reasonable investment, given the purchase and/or repair price of our trailer -- the extra $35 will be very well worth it IMHO, if it means the jack, plug, and safety chains lasting a few additional years -- none of those will be cheap to replace.

Mine developed problems with the electrical switch. Giving it some kind of protection (I threw on an old stuff sack from my backpacking gear) seems to make sense.

I'm guessing this is for storage only. Tash bin makes sense. You should be warned though....wasp and other such insects will love to make their nests up under there.

That looks so terrible but is a clever hack for hot days of sun searing rays. Creativity counts.

Good point, I agree. Now you got me wondering about an aluminum trash can. Hmmmm. THX for an honest observation.

Don't let me mess with your creativity, you would not believe how we travel, Beverly Billies here.

For aesthetics you could just paint your green recycle bucket with silver paint. I'm sure plastic is not as hot.
