Electric Tongue Jack

Can anyone recommend an electric unit? I have yet to read a good review; everything from it doesn't work in humidity to I have to hand crank most of the time.

I'm done hand cranking, but want to buy a dependable unit with a light.

I've had Barker jacks on two trailers. The 13 year-old jack on my recently purchased AS decided it would only raise the trailer and not lower it. Air forums suggested I needed a new switch, and that i should call the company about the problem, which I did. So even though the jack was at least 13 years old, Barker sent a new switch free of charge. On top of that, I mentioned the circular bubble leveling thingy that sits on top of the jack was old and yellowing and I wanted a new one which I offered to pay for. Barker sent me a new switch, a new bubble leveling thingy, and, surprisingly, a new limiter switch. They sent the parts to me to at a campground I chose in NM where I installed all the parts. All of this was done at their expense. By the way, the jack is working great and I expect it to last for a long time. I recommend the Barker jacks because of their customer service.

Hand cranking tongue jacks is for the birds.

I have a Barker VIP3000 and it works great. I had a similar story as JimW on service. When I moved unexpectadly I lost the hardware package with the bolt, spacer and lock washer and called Barker and and wanted to buy a kit. Bingo I had a package free of charge in 3 days. You can't beat that kind of service.

Now there's a company that knows how to advertise with customer service. Hmm, the dirt contractor on the job site was wondering about an electric jack on his utility trailer yesterday, I watched him turn seem like a hundred turns per inch. Hey Rich, try Barker.

Another Option

Nick,

Take a look here. www.adth.com/jacks.htm

I had one of these on my SOB and it worked very well. It was, as I remember quite a bit less than the regular options on the market. This is a very legit company.

I want to install a Barker VIP 3000. do I have to run a separate wire from the battery to the jack? or can I use a wire from the seven way hitch? If so which one? Do I have to drop the belley pan if I run a wire?

I installed the Barker VIP 3500 last weekend and ran back to the battery. I didn't feel there was enough slack in the hitch line to successfully make a splice. I did not drop the belly, but ran back instead running adjacent to existing lines. Where I had noting to zip to, I used zip wire attachments (self adhesive squares that I glued to the pan).

Camped with the Barker VIP 3500 for the first time last weekend and it lived up to expectations. Happy to not be cranking any longer!

Note for anyone happening on this thread -- don't consider powering a tongue jack any way but direct from the battery. The jack requires a 30 amp circuit with a 30 amp slow-blow fuse. It's doing a lot of heavy lifting and needs lots of current.

The Barker jack only requires one wire, the one from the battery. The ground comes from connection by a star washer between the tongue jack's flange and the a-frame.

I realize this is an old thread, but for anyone still subscribed to it I wanted to say thanks. I need a new jack this season and of course I was looking for cheaper. I have read the reviews on various sites regarding the <$100 models and I was skeptical of buying one. So, I came to the forums and based on this thread, it seems like Barker is the way to go. Not happy about near $200, but I'll gladly pay that with lots of happy customer backing than $100 for something that barely works or breaks within a few months of use.

After the episode where my nearly new Attwood 3000 got stuck in the up position when hitching my truck, I swore I'd get the biggest and best. Here's the issue. When you're attaching the WD hitch torsion bars, the back saving way is to connect the coupler to the TV, then raise the electric jack until the bars are easy to position.
That will be raising the trailer tongue AND the back of the TV.
When I had mine pretty high, the stock jack refused to retract and I couldn't crank it with the manual crank.
I decided my next tongue jack will be the 5000# Husky Super Brute. (considerable savings can be found by shopping around)

Electric Tongue Jack

I've been very satisfied with our Barker Electric Tongue Jack. It came installed on our '97 Airstream, a model 30 Limited, which was years old at the time. Years later of considerable use I've needed to call Barker twice and customer service has been unbelievable saving me from having to have it repaired at an RV dealership. The repairs in both cases were switches. (Not the same switch).

You just can't find customer service like Barker's any more.

Jim
