vista view re-sealing woes...

After reading for about an hour on how to fix leaking and foggy vista views, I set out to get started on mine. I must have misunderstood several things, and should have stopped when I thought "gee, this vulkem stuff doesn't quite seem like it will hold the glass in place", because it doesn't. I spent an additional hour cleaning up the old sealant, which did look and feel like old vulkem, from the glass and frame. After applying the new vulkem and replacing the glass, the glass, as you might imagine just falls right out. I did reinstall the two little rubber spacer things that isolate the glass from the bottom of the frame.
What did I do wrong? What do I need to do to keep the glass in place?
For now I just wedged the glass snug against the frame with a couple of folds of paper between the aluminum snap ring and glass, then closed the sliding shade to make sure it couldn't fall out. For the time being, I left the plexiglass out, and I may just omit it altogether but would like to hear more feedback on that as well as my current window "pains".
Thanks folks...
Ruben
