Problem Avoidance Maintenance

Have only been in Airstreaming a few years and recently bought a new 28' Flying Cloud. These forums certainly are shortening my learning curve; but, shudder when I read all the leak issues.

Does anyone have a maintence schedule for re-caulking around windows, belt line moulding, etc. that prevents these problems before happening? For example, following a tip from an experienced owner, last Fall, I applied butyl rubber backed foil tape on top of the caulk on the roof penetrations to stop or slow down the inevitable uv deterioration of the caulking. On non-leaking windows, does anyone re-caulk for prevention?

Any other ideas in this area would be appreciated.

If you check your seals and caulk a couple of times a year there should be no leak issues. Recaulk only when, and where, needed.

The key is to check on a regular basis that works for you(at least twice a year). Sealant on top of sealant does not always help as the sealants will have a build up of dirt and grime that can prevent bonding. If an area shows signs of cracking or a hole is visible ;it is better to remove old sealant then clean area with alcohol and reseal with any good exterior sealant with UV inhibitors.
