We have our 76 Airstream gutted and we are trying to repair all the leaks below floor level. No matter what I do I keep finding small leaks popping up depending on the direction of the rain. My question is is there normally small leaks in the belly pan. Or does it need to be completely dry. Also thank you for your help with the weatherstripping for the hatches. They are now watertight
From what I've seen the belly pan was never intended to be watertight. Water would eventually just get in then not get out. Also why some say it was dumb for Airstream to put fiberglass insulation=sponge in the belly pan. Just make sure the seems are overlapped to keep water from coming in from the front, while driving.
Belly pan is not supposed to be totally watertight. Water getting in needs to be able to drain out. In our '72, we drilled holes in the rear bumper compartment to let water escape from there. The rest of the belly pan has enough small gaps to let water out. We did not insulate under our floor. We did try to seal up the larger gaps in the belly pan to keep mice out.
To look at it from another perspective. Leaks in the belly pan could give you a hint that one of your tanks is leaking or a pipe fitting is loose/broken. Better a few spots that let water out and narrow down the real leak location. I have 4 tanks in the belly with assorted plumbing it helped me locate a GW leak at International this year
