Gaskets for running lights?

Just wondering, I'm about to replace the 'marker lights' the red and amber double bulls-eye type. there seems to be a track for a possible O-ring, is that recommended? Should I just coat the mounting screws and calk the hole for the wire? What did you do that worked? THANKS!
