Fein Multi-Master cuts right through tough old caulk like a hot knife!

Hello, I found that a Fein Mulit-Master fitted with the scraper blade cuts right through tough old caulk like a hot knife, because it is actually a hot knife. The oscillations against the caulk generate heat. I cut away about 1/16" thick layer and big gobs of caulk from this 18 x 26 skylight frame in about 5 minutes, when it would have taken much longer with a putty knife. It takes a minute or to get the angle & speed right, so that you only cut down to the paint or just leave a very thin layer of caulk to clean up with a solvent. If you're too enthusiastic, it will cut right down to the aluminum, which may not be a problem in some circumstances or where it could be repainted easily. It sure made removing the bath vent far easier too!

There are similar tools from other manufacturers - e.g. Bosch, Harbor Freight, but the Fein is very well-balanced and doesn't cause as much vibration stress to the hand.

I don't know why I didn't think of that when I removed the sealant around my Fantastic Fan recently, thankfully whatever had been used peeled off mostly with ease. I have a Dremel oscillating tool that I used for similar function on my house many times, it really is impressive what the little micro-oscillation can achieve.

Thanks for the reminder, hopefully I remember this the next time I have to do a sealant repair.

I have a HF el cheapo that I have used for untold hours. I seriously don't think I could have done my Trade Wind without. I use both the saw blade and the scraper all the time. Truly one of the handiest and most used tools in my shop.

Exactly so. Some scratches can be tolerated, and repaired quickly with a high quality paint or other sealant. A laceration or puncture might have unfortunate consequences, but I think the probability of that happening is quite low with any reasonable care.
