Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure

Hello,

Has anyone used this stuff to stop leaks on their Airstream with any success?

Capt. Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure

I have a few pesky leaks on my gutted 1976 Argosy and thought it could help.

Thanks, Gary.

I've used it quite a bit. It wicks into the smallest of leaks. I have occasionally even used it on top of freshly dried caulk for a little extra seal. If you let it drip beyond the area you want to seal, it will leave a not quite clear streak on the trailer skin which is tough to get off.

On my trailer there are several fixed windows under the opening unit. The glass seems to be held in with what looks like putty and is rock hard. One of them leaked. I fixed it with that product. I just filled the gap along the glass and let it dry. It seemed to disappear into the gap. I just kept applying it and let each application dry before doing another application. Once the seam showed that it was full I was done. This was about six years ago and still no sign of leaking. It is also almost invisible.
I'm sure that it is simply a very thin white glue similar to Weldbond which can be thinned with water and is waterproof.

Thumbs up

Interesting..no experience with it, actually never even heard of it.
Definitely worth a try though.
It's not like we don't have enough test sites.

Appears very similar in applications to Acryl-R.

Capt. Tolley's.

Both are an acrylic compound.

Great product...in fact, I no longer get stressed out over leaks...(already used it on my present Wally Byam take-it-home-do-it-yourself trailer project!!). It is a water-based penetrating sealant for leaks from hairline cracks. It finds its way inside cracks by capillary action, and rapid penetration indicates a leak. However, as Aviator mentioned, spills are difficult to remove.

captE,

"(already used it on my present Wally Byam take-it-home-do-it-yourself trailer project!!)."

2012...amusing statement....

Sad fact on such a "new" unit...

We can do it at home, but it can't be accomplished during gestation?

So much for the famous rain room used during assembly.

...glad someone caught the humor. Now here's a REALLY sad fact: yesterday I noticed corrosion beginning to break out from behind SEVERAL red/amber position lights...but I'll whine about that on another thread sometime.

I used it last Spring to find and stop a leak around a window. It can be a little messy because it is very thin and runny, but it solved my issue. I will have this on hand from now on!

Bob,

This stuff is even thinner than Acryl-R. I really like the Acryl-R product, but for the extremely thin gaps, this stuff will pull right in and seal.

On our trailer, I have removed the old caulk and resealed around all the windows and doors with either Vulkem or Acryl-R. When I finished that project, I found that there were still a couple of leaks with no obvious source. Going back around all the panel edges with the Capt. Tolley's did the trick. I am still not sure which area was the culprit, but it is sealed now!

Will find this product in most marine stores.

Works well in stress cracks in fiberglass gel coat on boats; but, would have never used it on a leaking fitting, port, etc. In those instances, the permanent solution was to remove, clean up, re-bed with appropriate caulk and reinstall.

Hadn't thought about it's use on an Airstream; but, would consider as a last ditch solutions for any leaks I can think of.

Certainly a tad bit of moderator wizardry.

Ya gotta love the name of this stuff, really! Reminds me of the shirts that Duluth Trading Co. sells to cure plumber's butt!

So it looks like I have my first and foremost spring project, clean every rivet and seam around and above the leaks and apply this stuff and hope for the best. (Should I just apply it to every seam and rivet?) Also, keep a rag nearby to wipe up any drips. There's really only three spots of concern, on either side of the door entrance and under the curbside wrap around window in the front. I already applied Liquid Nails Polyurethane sealant to the obvious places which slowed them down a bit but did not stop them.

Gary.
