butyl putty tape on the roof

I am re-sealing the roof vents on my 78 safari. The current seals appear to be 2 inch wide flexible material the run the entire perimiter of the vents.

I found butyl putty tape thats seem to be a good candidate for a replacement material. Most usage directions indicate that this is used when installing the vents. After celaning off the old material , I want to "coat" the entire perimeter rivets with it.

does anyone have any experience using this on a roof? Since the material is fully exposed, how does it hold up to the heat? Will it remain sicky and
collect debris?

Thanks
Bill

Is the what we are talking about...Butyl Rubber Tape - Flexible tacky adhesive Sealing Tape

If so, it does remain sticky until enough stuff is stuck to it. I would wonder how UV resistant it is.

I have used PL Polyurethane for a sewer vent repair, has worked very well, stayed ply-able. On it's third season now.

Ck your black tank vent while your up there, if fact ck 'em all.

yes, that the stuff...specifically Putty Tape - Flexible Grey Rope Tape Sealant

I just like the idea of just taping the seams. I'll look into the roof flashing sealant

Thanks

Putty tape, "does not" hold up in the sun, period.

Reseal all roof openings with Vulkem. That will do just fine, for 40 years or so.

Try C 10 Flow Seal. Self leveling caulk that is incredibly easy to brush or flow on.

Butyl sealants whether tape or tube based are intended to be used in joints where they are in compression and away from UV exposure. For exposed items like rivet heads and around the edges of vents you want Vulkem, Sikaflex or the current factory favorite Acryl R.
