Vents

Hope this has not been posted before but if it has here it goes again. After searching info on new roof vents and the cost of some new roof vents I'm in a crisis of what to do. Our middle vent has started a leak not surprised as the plastic or plexi on the top is cracked as a quick fix last spring I just sealed it. Now the leak is back. I love the way the old ones look because they match. Can you get just the replacement for the top, or has someone on here renovated the old ones. The fans have not worked for sometime, but I do like the lights. Any help on making my mind up and saving the pocket book would be appreciated.

Replacement vents for 70's are pretty readily available. Anyone who takes one out to put in a Fantastic Fan has them. There were several available at the RMVAC Swap Meet in August...they couldn't give them away!

I would suggest putting a "Wanted Ad" in the Forums classifieds or keep your eyes peeled on ebay. One will turn up...see if you can temporarily reseal the leak until then. You may also post a "Wanted Ad" on the VAC Classifieds website.

I ordered replacement "lids" from Inland RV on 3/12/04. I didn't find their cost to be all that prohibitive at that time. You might want to consider replacing with new rather that old since old will likely just have to be replaced again in a very few years.

You can buy plexiglas at any home store and cut out a piece and glue it in the aluminum frame with vulcem or other urethane caulking compound. Less than $5 repair.

Becky, If you have the opporunity, why not post a pic of what you have. That way, maybe someone will have what you need or can post a good idea of a fix. I have two older models left that will be going on Ebay in a couple of weeks. One of them might be what you need. In any case, the fan motors on either one are in very good condition, and would do you a good job.....BUT, before you go putting in a different one, I HIGHLY recommend one of the before mentioned repairs. In fact, during the late eighties, and early 90's, the meal top had a square hole approx. 12x12 in it, that had a peice of white plastic riveted and glued on with a sealer. If that is what you have, it not only would be cost effective, but a quick, "best" fix to go that way.
The motors can be replaced very easily, just hold your breath while you pay for it!
Good luck.

Just what the doctor ordered, I now plan to repair to old ones. I like to be as original and cost affective as possible. We never use the fans, I do raise the vents for fresh air, but I also love the a/c when it is needed. Thanks for all the advice and I will post pics as we finish.
