roof vent replacement won't close tight

Hello All.

It's all about keeping the water out now. Thunderstorm season. All was going well until this afternoon. I bought three replacement vent covers from VTS and they are lovely. removed the old one. Replaced the hardware. Sealed the new rivets. Reattached it. Even remembered which way round the springs go, and then....uh oh. It won't close to a tight fit. Is there anything I can do to adjust the linkage? Please help.
