Maxim Skylight FOR SALE & A Cautionary Tale

I DO know better, but still managed to make a dumb miscalculation. I called Maxim to get info on turnaround time, cost, etc. for.a replacement for my Eddie Bauer's skylight. They were delighted and said they had done several 25 FBs so it would be easy and gave me the correct measurements for the opening and the skylight. I confirmed those measurements with an Airstream mechanic who had actually done a few, and I took a cursory look at the outside of mine.... knowing that removing it when (A) I fulltime and (B) it is freaking December ...made it impractical to pull the skylight.

Well... it doesn't fit. My skylight opening is slightly oversized and trapezoidal because one side is .25 inches longer than the other three.

So yesterday I ordered skylight 2.0 with measurements that have been checked about a dozen times.
There is good news however.
...skylight 1.0 is for sale for any reaonable offer
...there is a way to measure your raw opening without puling the OEM skylight, but plywod or plexi can make a temporary cover.
...Maxim graciously put a rush on the relacement because they are not backed up.

I have to break this into 3 or 4 posts... life is hapening. #2 in a few min.

MEASURING FOR REPLACEMENT SKYLIGHT
Ripping off the old OEM skylight works best, but if your wait time to receive the new one is weeks away, you'll need a secure plywood or plexi cover. Sticking an open umbrella in the hole? Not so much.

In 2012 the OEM skylights are held on by double-sided tape alone. It is laid on the 1/2 inch wide curb of the extrusion that finishes the opening on the roof. A Maxim skylight fits over this extruded curb and should have 1/4 inch (.25) clearance on each of the 4 sides.

Measure the tape on all four sides to the outside edges, and make sure both diagonals are equal.

MEASURING 2

Checking for square ie: equal length diagonals is tricky with the arch in the skylight, so using a carpenter's square on all 4 corners is a good backup.

If you find that all the corners aren't 90° and you have a parallelogram or a trapezoid (remembering 9th grade geometry?) You'll probably be ok nudging that 1/4 inch clearance a bit in one or 2 corners. Call Maxim for advice, they are helpful!

In 2006 and possibly later the OEM SKYLIGHTS WERE SCREWED IN and caulked heavily. Those.have to come off the roof to be measured.

IS YOUR AIRSTREAM A CANDIDATE FOR A SHINEY NEW MAXIM SKYLIGHT AT A BARGAIN PRICE?

if your roof opening is 21.75 by 21.75 inches and is square - or really close to square it will fit beautifully.

I cannot promise, but it should work on an opening that is up to 22 inches sqare. The Maxim is precisely built... parts of an Airstream not readily visible, eh, not so much.

If you have an Airstream that does NOT have a skylight, but wants one, and you have skills, here's your chance.

I'm surprised someone hasn't jumped at it. I got two in the same manner a year or so ago. We LOVE them. The PO of my trailer had put on new gray plastic ones, also with butyl tape, but I just peeled them off easily (probably the Florida sun, lol). I was surprised they hadn't pulled off going down the road.

You could, but it is not quite that simple. Both the OEM and Maxim skylights mount to a "curb" which is basically a frame made from "Z-bar" aluminum that is mounted to the roof top. There is usually some form of support to the inner skin, in this case a piece of wood which you can just see on the short sides if you click on the picture. There is a trim piece that mounts to the underside of the inner skin (not included with the skylight) that covers the cut on the inside like a picture frame and extends up into the hole to the top of the curb. Careful consideration would have to be given to the way the outer skin was cut.The holes in the inner and outer skins are not the same size, as seen in the picture, at least on my trailer they weren't.



The skylight is screwed into the side of the curb in several places. The screws on top are a part of the skylight assembly, not part of the mounting.

Thank you Al and Missy for assisting in this answer. I would only add that the difference in the roof curve on our wide body Airstreams and on an 8 ft. Wide trailer make building the curb a bit more complex. I lack the skills to attempt it. I would call OODM or the factory for.assistance.

My sky light was broken by hail a few years ago. It had been parked in the Dallas heat for years. 2008 25' Safari. I decided to go to Home Depot and buying a flat sheet of 1/2" Plexi glass, drilling and super calking it into place. No leaks, no problems. I have laid a piece of 3m rubber roof type tarp over the A/C cover and skylight for temporary weather relief.

1/2 inch plexi ought to stand up to a Zombie apocalypse! I went with the Maxim because of its hurricane rating, sleek look, but mostly for the many choices of tint across 3 layers. In Minnesota the owner might prefer all three in clear. Any Texan would want at least one layer of smoke or bronze to minimize glare and heat gain.

I replaced my OEM Skylight on my 2007 FB Safari years ago with a Maxim. Much better quality and far superior. Luckily I had zero issues with fit.

I can recommend the Maxim folks as reputable and very helpful.

I put Maxims (2) on our 30' Classic a few years ago. I went with clear-bronze-clear and with I had gone darker. Still happy with them though. Just something for new purchasers to ponder
