Looking for skylight installation instructions

Good Afternoon
I got replacement parts from Airstream for hail damaged factory installed skylights (domes, trim ring, frame) but no installation instructions. Airstream is not helpful as usual. Has anyone installed these and have a link to instructions to share? I am not having any luck searching the forum.

I've never replaced the skylights but I watched this video on how it is done ... just in case!

These are a different brand of skylight than the ones supplied by AS but I'm sure the process is very similar.

All the best.

I replaced a cracked skylight last year. The replacement skylight came with no instructions. I just took note of how the cracked skylight was installed while I removed it, then replicated the install. It was pretty straightforward.

I have replaced my factory skylight with the same model AS uses. It is made by Sun Tek. I did not use the trim ring nor did I install it like the factory does. Their way causes cracks and leaks. I install the skylight by sticking it down to the curb with 3M VHB tape. I made some spacers to go between the curb and the vertical side of the skylight. I uses machine screws thro
ugh the existing holes to attach the skylight to the curb.

Maxim

The stock factory ones literally peel off. I had ours peeled off and replaced with Maxim 3 layer skylights. You may want to look into these superior products for Hail Heat and Cold Control. You can custom pick your shading .

Since Airstream was cracking the skylights they switched to just double sided tape, no screws. Agree with other comment, check out Maxim skylights.

Maxim hurricane rated. Far superior to peel n stick application which at some point will become a sky hole

Glass skylight?

Has anyone tried a glass skylight e.g
https://www.homedepot.com/p/VELUX-Truss-Series-22-1-2-in-x-23-in-Fixed-Deck-Mount-Skylight-with-Laminated-Low-E3-Glass-FS-D26-2004/202742210

Is the concern breaking from body flex?

I have these in my house and love them….

Placed order today for Maxim Skylights

I figured it’s time to replace the factory skylights on our soon to be five year old trailer before we have a problem.

I called Maxim today and spoke with Cassie. She said if I ordered light gray, clear, clear dome color and clear anodized finish, there’s about a 10 day lead time. Cost is $364 for the square and $299 for the rectangular unit (FedEx shipping included).

Looking forward to installing them this Spring!

These are not designed for that application, plus off the shelf I am not sure would directly fit. Could it be made to work, probobly, but I would stick with something like the Maxim or similar that was designed to be in movement with 60-75 mile an hour winds regularly. The link product is/was designed for static installation is my guess.

Maxim skylights delivered

My Maxim skylight order arrived yesterday. It's snowing today but the weather is supposed to warm up Sunday and Monday. Hoping to get at least one installed before the weather changes again.

I found a rubber wheel that is supposed to remove VHB tape and adhesive. Fingers crossed it does the job and lessens the amount of scraping / solvent required. Got two tubes of OSI Quad Max adhesive which is what Toni at Maxim recommended.

*There's a protective film on the top - I'll remove that prior to installation.

To tape or not to tape?

Hail cracked my skylight dome a couple weeks ago. I got new one from AS dealer in northern Ohio, but it did not come with Al frame or double sided tape. The guy there (really nice) said they don't use that when they install them in their shop. Now, I'm getting ready to go up there and replace it, and I'm wondering just how to do it.

There are no screw holes in the existing (broken) one and none in the new replacement one. I'm guessing I should look for double sided tape and use something like silkaflex 521?

Any recommendations on the tape? I noticed that 521 is a sealant and 522 is their adhesive. Anyone have experience with either?

I see that it would be a bad idea to drill into the dome itself, for that would only crack.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Joe, you may want to ask Aistream service what VHB tape they recommend since there are so many to choose from.

I used a carpet knife to cut the old tape then a stiff putty knife to loosen the old skylight. Once you get it off, clean any remaining tape and residue from the aluminum curb - I used a strong solvent (Xylol) to get the adhesive off.

Put the tape on one side then press the new skylight down onto the curb.

Hope that helps!

3M Tape

That was a good suggestion about calling AS to find out what kind of doublesided tape they used.

Had a long wait, but did find out it is 3M.

Thanks!

Jon, that's great to hear about the 3M tape. Just curious if they gave you the 3M part number because they have so many different kinds.

Jeff, did you end up using your wheel? Or scraping and Xylol enough? How are the Maxim skylights? Curses, another thing to add to the upgrade list, I don't like the flimsy plastic ones they put in.

Jeff, the wheel I got from Amazon kinda worked but did not remove all the tape adhesive. 3M sells a wheel but it’s a lot more expensive. I guess you get what you pay for?

I tried using mineral spirits first then lacquer thinner, each did a little better. The Xylol finally softened the residue and I was able to use a plastic scraper to get the buggers off. Wear gloves!🧤

The Maxim skylights are really quality units with three layers and rigid compared to the factory ones. No more concerns about them cracking.
