Bath Roof Vent Leaking

The Van Air 12 volt vent in the bath leaks when it rains. I have used the water hose and put water around the base on top of the trailer but it does not leak. When it rains, the water comes in through this vent. It doesn't matter whether the vent is raised or lowered. Any ideas where the water is entering the vent?

This is a 2003 Safari and is kept inside storage except when we bring it home to load for our trips.

My trailer the top plastic cover on the vent was cracked. Also raise the vent and check from the outside. On mine there is a vertical metal rim around the fan opening with a 1/4 in drain hole at the lowest point. That hole was plugged with dirt and caused water to spill back int the ceiling.

That rim is to keep wind blown water from entering when the vent is opened but weith the hole being plugged and the plastic cover cracked it caused water to get in.

Howie, I think that I cured my problem, I hope. There is a rubber insert on each side of the vent cover. I believe the water was entering this area. I took them out and re-sealed them with silicon. Did the water test and no water entered the trailer. I'm just hoping this may have cured my problem. I certainly appreciate the imput.

IMHO, this may have been a better choice of sealant.

geez i have the same leak probblem on both my pop ups (1 in shower and 1 in the bathroom). I hope my fix is as easy as that!

I stock that same caulk (PL Polurethane) in my hardware store but purchased some Vulkem from an online supplier. Both seem to be very much the same. Does anyone know how much difference there are in the two products? Since I can purchase the PL wholesale is the Vulkem worth 3-4 times the costs including freight?

If Vulkem is that stuff that was smeared all over the roof of our AS, I'm

not sure what the chemical difference might be, but the PL sealant seems

to be a little more flexable (tough) when dry and was easy to use. Was up

on the roof for Spring get ready and still looks great. Only time will tell.

The black color was my only concern, does absorb more heat. But then

again that "white" Vulkem gets pretty crudy looking after awhile.

The PL caulking that I have is actually "PL Polyurethane Window, Door & Siding Sealant" (Ace stock #1050889) and it is the same color as the Vulkem that I purchased (gray). It says on the tube that it "is a premium comercial sealant for permanent, water and weather resistant exterior gaps and joints" and it states that it has a 50 year life and is permanently flexible.

Interesting read. I guess this to be a common problem. I'm having same issues now also in my 2005 AS international.

Can't see anything obviously broken right now but I was not aware of the drain hole. Would anyone recommend removing the sealant and replacing it, or just apply new sealant on top of the old stuff? Is the roof strong enough for me to lie on it? Thanks.
