Stack Window Restoration

Any tips or tricks on how to slide the two-piece frame off of the stack window so we can replace the gaskets? Seems to be put together differently then the vista windows and cannot slide those pieces apart. We’ve tried simply pulling the frame pieces in opposite direction and using a putty knife at the split in the pieces. It won’t budge!

That looks like a Vista Vue window to me. There are steel pins holding the two sides (the aluminum frame) together.

Believe it or not it is actually where the stack window goes and is flat glass! This article is really helpful but we are still unable to get the frame off far enough to cut the pins. A bit frustrating! Thank you for the help, though.

Some Vista Vues are flat and some are curved (depending on year and model). Some are held in by gaskets in the frame, some are held in place by gaskets and an aluminum insert that goes all the way around (by far the easiest to rebuild). Here was my response from your comment on the blog...

"...if you can *carefully* place a chisel in the crack where the frame will separate and gently tap, you can usually get the frame to open a little (then pry the rest of the way). Also, try first using a “rust buster” type material like WD-40 or PB Blaster and letting it soak into the area with the split and the pin to help loosen up any corrosion or other gunk that might be holding it together.

Hope this helps!
