Mottling, corrosion, oxidizing on window screens and frames
So I see on all my 50 year old window screens and frames this mottling or oxidizing mostly on the interior. I'd like to be able to remove as much of this as possible. I tried Flitz and fine steel wool, but no difference really. What would be a good technique to remove this? Thanks much.

I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone has any other suggestions. All I can think of is some very fine-grit sand paper, or emery cloth. It would definitely be a trial and error thing, but it might work. Might even try Bar Keepers Friend | Cleaning Products | Household Cleaning Supplies

New Screens?
Have you looked into the pricing for new screens? My GlobeTrotter and Trade Wind screens both had corrosion inside the frame tubing and out and I found a professional screened patio and window repair place that had the "knife edge" window screen frame in stock. It was identical to the screen frame used in 1966-8 and the average cost was around $20 each for the six windows.
As for removing your corrosion I'd have agree with the very fine sandpaper or green scrubby idea.

That reminds me.... I used a scotchbrite pad on my aluminium LP tanks and they cleaned up real nice. It took some elbow grease, but it worked well.

Did you use anything with the Scotch Brite pads like water or anything? So new at all of this...thanks.

Thanks...turned out pretty well. Could have been brought up to mirror but I wanted them to blend well with the skin.
Hardest part was removing the poorly applied clear....

Do not use steel wool. It will imbed in to the aluminum and turn it black. Use aluminum wool. Many airplane finishes have been ruined with steel wool.

I used maroon scotch brite and wd40 , followed by grey scotch brite and more wd40. Something in that wd40 is magical !

Oh my gosh Reinergirl that is just exactly what I needed to see (and read!). Thank you for your thread--not only informative but very entertaining as well!
Luckily I had just started with one window screen, and will try the scotch brite and WD40 on the window frames as well. Still debating if I need to remove the windows or not. I am hoping they just need some new weatherstripping and seam sealants. I will need to do the plastic gaskets too, so your description on your coping method was timely as well.
Thanks also Guskmg for the heads up on not using steel wool. I hadn't heard of that before.
Tackling a bunch of things this week. Supposed to be upper 60s to 70 by the weekend here in Northern Cal.
