Ours were pretty sticky on our 77 Overlander, 'Buttercup.'
While they were closed I cleaned them, on the side that I could reach. I used Simple Green 50/50 with water and a toothbrush. Yes, a toothbrush. Then rinsed them with water and sponge then dried with a terry towel. They work pretty good now. Only get difficult when it is very hot out.
There are a few places that sell the white 'vista view trim' which would probably help make them smoother to operate. I haven't bought any, none of ours was damaged.
