Wheel lock security opinion

I have been traveling for a year with a Brahma wheel lock and have never used it. I haven’t done much boondocking, though plan to do more. I don’t envision leaving the trailer alone without the truck connected. Is there any reason to keep the Brahma? Should I sell it? Thoughts? Every time I sell something like this, I regret it a week later. Unfortunately, real estate is short.

Seems reasonable that if you have had something for a year and never used it that perhaps you don't need it.

I've had collision insurance on my car for years but haven't 'used it'. Should I cancel that?

My thought behind carrying a lock (I have a similar one to yours) is for that rare time when I will need it. With my luck the day after I sell it I'll have some type of breakdown or emergency which requires leaving the trailer on its own. When that happens I want all possible measures to slow down a would-be thief.

That is a silly comparison and you know it. Let's all stop wearing our seatbelts since we haven't had an accident for years. Or, hey, let's stop putting fuel in the tank because we have never run out of gas.

The OP is asking for opinions and I gave mine. You denigrating it adds nothing to the thread.

Hi

A lock that never gets used is simply ballast. You don't need that in an RV. You only need a limited amount in a boat. Either you use it, or you toss it out. Keeping it along means not bringing something else you probably would find useful ... .errr .... more beer .... ... there is no such thing as to much beer ...

Guess you didn't bother reading the rest of my comment then where I gave my reasons for carrying the same type of lock.

The analogy to insurance was not intended to be a smart comment, but just to point out that just like insurance which I hope to never use I carry a wheel lock which I also hope to never need. Sorry you missed my point.

You never used it. What circumstances would induce you to use it in the future? If none; why keep it.

Truck connected makes it more difficult to steal the AS. If that is your MO what value does the Brahma add?

FTR…We Brahma-lock ours at a well-secured storage facility. Not at campgrounds.

Wheel lock security opinion

A suggestion for OP, ditch the wheel lock in place of a high quality shielded cable, wrap it through wheel and around axel secure with again a good quality puck lock. Comes in handy to secure other items.

we use the Brahma wheel lock as we don't keep the As hooked up to the TV.
we also have a 12V disconnect inside for the hitch lift and we lock the ball

Thus an idiot would have to disable all three to move our AS

Be aware that a professional thief with a battery-power grinder can cut that lock off in less than 5 minutes (don't ask me how I know). Any wheel lock will just slow a thief down or perhaps stop an amateur thief. If you are worried about theft, I would recommend a GPS tracker (similar to a LoJack - I use a "SPOT Trace"). It "might" speed up recovery.

I use wheel lug locks, tire locking X-chocks and a hitch lock to slow down the thieves. Alternatively, you could leave a large Rottweiler hooked up to your RV when you're out and about.

Happy Glamping.

- Mike W.

P.S., We have not had any theft problems now that our Rottweiler is full grown.

My wife and I full timed for several years and to control weight, imposed a 90 day rule. If something stored in camper that wasn't used within 90 days, it had to be given away. Wound up with a long list of exempted items, but a Brahma might have gone away. I currently use a wire rope security cable and padlock, doesn't take up much room.

Hi there. From what I read, you never want to leave your tow vehicle and camping unit attached. It makes is super easy for the thief. Not only does he have your sweet camper, but he's towing it down the road too

I made my own lock using a Proven Lock puck lock.

This fits into my Andersen leveller and locks it to the wheel.

It might slow the crooks down by 5 minutes. I think that more deterrents are only going to help. But it the crooks are determined, nothing will stop them.

I use our Brahma mostly when in storage. I bring it along just in case I feel uncomfortable where I parked. Just got back from a 5 week trip. Didn’t use it once.
