Top door latch sometimes sticks down

The top door latch on the end of the door (the claw like latches) will sometimes stick down if you hit it with your finger while closing the door, and the handle doesn’t spring it back, so you have to push it back up with your finger. This is a 9-year-old door and I am worried it might fall down when the door is closed and lock us out or in. Is there any easy way to fix this or do I have to have the whole top lock mechanism replaced?
