Screen Door Catch.

Does anyone have any idea how to take apart the screen catch that holds the screen door to the main door on a 1971 Safari. I have tried to take it apart but am having no luck. I can't figure out how to attach a picture of the part I am talking about. If you know how to attach a picture, tell me and I will attach one.

Larry

Larry, is it the black plastic spring loaded latch on the main door?
If so, it's a single-use item, and isn't designed to be disassembled or removed without replacing it. It also is supposed to be NLA.

Terry,

Yes it is the sping loaded latch.
What does NLA mean, I have not heard of the term? Also if it is one time use, how would you install a new one because there seems to be no way to attach it with rivits. Thanks for your help.

Larry.

NLA means "no longer available".

That black plastic latch has not been available for several years.

We suggested years ago, and since then many owners now use the entrance door holdback, which has the metal hosing and a different black plastic latch.

I have the metal one on the main door to keep the screen door secure. It does the job. I also installed another one on the screen door to keep Gracie (yellow lab) from opening the screen door.

oh contrare mon amies

Larry--if your talking about the black slider that holds the main door open then yes it can be taken apart!

I have repaired mine---I found an old dude [former airstream employee] who showed me how---just retract the slider and while holding it pry a thin screw driver into the end-between the two halves and presto it will come apart!-----

if you look up my name and then go to my posting dated 3-22-06 there are pics---good luck!----

by the way how do you like your 71? [the black sheep of the airstream world]--I love mine!!---jim

James what and why do you call the '71 the "Black Sheep of the Airstream World"?
IYHO is that just your model or all the models of that year?

I thought all the trailers made prior to 1969 and after 1980 were the black sheep, even blacker in the 1990s and oh so black since 2000.

BTW Here is the link for JamesSardis "obsolete" door hardware pix:

Larry- I think that 1971 is the first year that the new airstream owner "Beatrice" eliminated the use of real wood[ In an effort to reduce costs?] in all models I believe.

why do you say prior to 1969 and after 1980?

Is that strange device on the left rear of your trailer a h2o fill?

thanx-jim

Yet another screen door latch question....

I travel with several large cats (domestic that is) that can pop open the screen door roller ball latch. I need to find a good dependable latch that they can not open and yet I can still get in from the outside when it is closed. Any ideas? Pictures would help.

Thanks,

Terry

James...

This is first time I've used the forum to solve a problem with my 1971 Airstream Globetrotter.

My thanks for a great solution to my latch problem. If all repairs could take just 15 minutes from looking for a solution to making the fix!!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I have taken them apart and sometimes even been able to get them back together. Slide the top little black thingy back against in the direction of the spring pressure. It feels like it can't but it can. Then it flys apart. Remember how it comes apart. Good luck catching the teeny spring. 50/50 chance you will break it.

Those buggers are also used in other places like the bumper locker and rock guard.

Inland RV and maybe other retailers sells replacements that are a little bigger and made of aluminum and plastic.

I got one of these at Home Depot recently. Slightly smaller but otherwise functionally identical.

Latch

Unfortunately, the sliding black plastic latch that was used to hold the screen door to the entrance door, held the sewer compartment cover in place as well as holding the entrance door open against the shell, has not been available for several years.

Using the new style entrance door holdback with the metal cover, is all that Airstream has available that can be used as a substitute.

With a little patience, they are not difficult to install, and last a lot longer.

Andy

No problem. Still need to cleanup and fill the old hole with a white pop rivet. It is my bad, I had the old one off when I removed the inner skin to replace the shade in the door of my Excella and lost it. Worst is I have no one but myself to blame.

Some Airstream dealers have that old screen door latch.

But, from Airstream, they are rather expensive.

I will check out Home Depot as another source.

Thanks.
