Repair lock?
I am totally new here, so please forgive my newbie ignorance.
A friend has graciously offered me the use of her new (to her) 2nd hand 1973, 31-foot Airstream on her rural property for holidaying, but the door lock is broken.
She's asked me to fix it.
The key just turns around and around in the lock.
I haven't even seen it yet, but I'm heading up-country to the place on Wednesday.
Can I dismantle the door lock from the inside?
What kind of lock is it?
Are they easy to replace?
Are they an automotive lock?
Do I go look at it, determine what it is then replace it?
I'll be there for three days, then back again in two weeks.
there's an issue with the propane too, but I'll get to that after I figure out how to lock it up.

What kind of lock is it? I don't know what vintage the trailer is.

When you ask about repairs on any Airstream, you must usually be very specific as to what year trailer.
Over the years Airstream used many different locks.
Some are no longer available, some parts are no longer available, some parts are cheap and plentiful, and some parts are very expensive.

I think you said a 73. The bad news is the factory lock is a KT200. Post a photo to be sure. You can easily tell if it mounts flush to the surface of the door and has a latch not a knob. The original parts are ridiculously expensive for this lock. The better news is Andy (above) makes some parts to fix the lock more reasonably. Your description sounds like a bad tumbler. They are reasonably cheap to replace. Look up Andy at Inland RV's website and give them a call.
I just don't trust this lock, so I use a locking hasp made by Stanley to lock up the trailer.

Aerowood replaced his lock. This required some expert metal working, but the lock was inexpensive ($35) and works better than the original.

I replaced the KT lock with an off the shelf lock that I picked up at a local RV dealer. The work that I had to preform on the door frame was extensive and this would not be a task for most do-it -your-selfers. I have been doing Aircraft structural repairs professionally for close to 35 years, so this was a cool project for me. My cast frame had been involved with some sort of impact damage in the past so I had to de-skin it anyway to properly weld it up and restore the contour.

Just completed some repairs to my 73, new spring cleaning and graphite lube, I'm a hack handyman so most could do it, but I had to as I learned that a replacement lock set is around $500....not hard to take apart, if it a simple fix you can save a buck....

Gave it a shot of fFuid Film and played with a peculiar added on screw someone had jerry-rigged in there on the inside and it locks now.
