Rain getting in!

Our back storage compartment is getting wet after a rain. I tore out the carpet and pad it was so soaked. After another rain more wet wood. The only thing I know to do is replace the gasket. Anyone else have this problem?

Damp rid and an air mover will help pull the moisture out. Our rear hatch we can adjust the latches so it closes tighter. Any luck with that? Otherwise you’re right, best best is replace the gasket and adjust the door as needed.

Thanks for the suggestion of adjusting a tighter fit. Our door actually has a thin d channel gasket that Out of Doors Mart says that appears to be a previous owner add on. I will replace the gasket where the door closes into.

Is it possible that the water is coming in from where the bumper attaches to the camper? I used 3m strip calk on mine but it lives inside when not in use. It hasn’t been outside much in the rain since I did it.

Do you know if the water gets in while towing, or when parked?

You could try placing bright lights from the inside, at night if you see any escaping light around the gasket that may confirm your suspicion.

I tore the carpet out, drilled drain holes in the drawer, installed drain tiles and resealed the belt molding. I did the same to all storage compartments.

^Nice solution.

I don't like mold; therefore, I don't like carpet.

I've removed carpet from eight houses I've owned. Each one had mold in at least one area. Bathrooms are the worst. Carpet is a sponge, holding water, wetting the substrate for extended periods of time. Replaced it with hardwood, vinyl, or porcelain/ceramic tile.

I'm very happy that my AS has no carpet anywhere.

Confirm the gasket is the problem first. After you dry the compartment, go to the hardware store and get some masking film with blue painters tape already attached. Put a piece of the plastic film over the compartment and tape it down. See if the compartment gets wet after the next rain.

I was getting a little water in my side compartments. I traced the problem down to the rivets that hold the hinges on. The hinges are outside the gasket. They get wet. The rivets are ordinary pop rivets. I believe the heads leak. I put some sealant on the rivet heads and around the edges of the hinges. My compartments are dry now.

Hi, The factory storage door seal does practically nothing. Mine didn't leak water, but leaked cold outside air under our bed. I used double D weather strips all around the storage door. [note, only one shown in these pictures] No more leaks.

Hi Bob, do you have a MFG / Part number for those weather strips?

In my ‘94 I had a leak at the licence plate bracket. It is a large plastic moulded piece that is installed in a cutout in the outer skin. I caulked around it with Acryseal 15 years ago and so far still no further leak.

How is the caulking around the bottom rub rail, above windows, behind the clearance lights, around the awning brackets, between the bumper cover and body, etc....
My trailer leaked like a sieve until I took some time to dig out the old caulking and recaulk a few things.

The factory (I'm assuming) weather-stripping around the compartment door on my trailer was installed with the ends (and potential gap) at the bottom. After frequently knocking it loose at the bottom, I flipped it around so that the ends are at the top. No more knocking it off. And I discovered that the weather-stripping was cut about a half-inch short.

I'm interested the part number of the Double-D weather-stripping, too.

Hi, most any hardware store will have this weather stripping. I was unable to find a part number or even a picture of this in a package.

Rain getting in

If all else fails, then leak test. Some of the water could be coming from a leak on the roof and running down to the hatch area.

Silver Oaks Airstream Park in Aransas Pass, TX had this same problem AND I have fixed it. I need to send you pictures of what I did and what the gasket material looks like from Lowes. Give me a call, my number is on my web site. Doc

Until you know exactly where the water is coming from you are just hoping to hit the correct solution. I suggest you find a company that has a SealTech leak testing machine (https://rvleaks.com/) that can find any points of water impingement into the trailer. Then with that knowledge a solution is easy to identify. If you are in the New England area I can provide that service.

RFuller, where are you located, and how much does the service cost?

I’ve been chasing leaks myself. Does anyone know of a reliable seal tech technician in Florida?
