Is this deadbolt original or "custom"?

At any rate, it does not work. It is missing the internal part that actually makes it work. It has the same knob on both sides. I assume its kind of a child lock / animal lock or maybe a safety precaution during towing?

I believe this was available in 67 and 68. This thread may help.

original

66, 67, 68 had those. BUT>>>>>still use a mechanical lock too..the old faithful wood block.

I've seen the same lock on lots of trailers of that era...enough to think it is original - or at least standardized option.

That was an original "travel lock".

You could lock and unlock it from the outside, but you could only open it from the inside, just in case someone on the outside decided to engage it.

I have a Good source for replacement!

I just bought a replacement for my 1968 Globetrotter. You can replace the assembly through Vintage Trailer Supply. They offer either the style with 2 knobs or the one I have, with an exterior knob and an inner handle. The inner handle locks by lifting on it. Very nice, but mine was about 130.00. Yours is about 1/2 that I believe. Be careful to read VTS info re: ordering to assure the correct style, either a short locking rod or a long one dependent on the positioning of the lock on the door. Hope that helps.

Has anyone else had issues with their replacement door handle?

My mechanism is coming loose inside the door. The knob gears will not catch unless pushed toward the trailer. Very annoying. If I need to start a new thread I guess I could.

There is a huge problem with the inside "handle" type lock used in the 66, 67, 68 and 69 trailers.

When your on the inside and need to "slam" the door shut, that inside handle will breaks.

Many hundreds of them took that dive.
