Interior door handle will not come off

I have a 72 sovereign and have been trying to get the interior handle off the lock mechanism for a week now. I have spoken with one guy from the forum who had a similar issue but still not having much luck. I'm going to attach a few pics hoping that someone would have the answer. Basically the set screw was stripped so I had to drill it out. It was hard to tell how deep it went so I may have gone deeper or not deep enough - dont know, but i'm afraid to go any deeper or larger in fear of drilling through the rod that the handle fits onto. I have used lubricants and heat and that handle does not want to budge. My understanding is that it could have a square shaft under it so in that case it would not twist off - just pull straight off. I was hoping to take it of to have it sandblasted and to take to a locksmith for keys. What am I missing here??

It appears the part is broken. Do you see the angle? It is not perpendicular as it should be. You can get a new one I think from Out the Doors Mart and Vintge trailer supply. If you can I would hacksaw it off the replace it.

To their page of parts and diagram:

door latch

well we went ahead and cut into the skin enough to get the handle through and remove the entire mechanism. Now we can really see whats going on. Still cant get the darn handle off but at least I dont have to work on it at that awkward angle. I think we may be able to get it all working. Thank you so much for your reply
