how to repair corrosion of '75 door handle?

Heya, been workin' hard on this ol' scrapheap, and I've gotten to the point where removin' the door handle was as simple as pulling it out. After reviewing this, I've determined that all the parts are still there.

This is my beef with the handle, though:

(HOW DO YOU POST PICTURES HERE?!)

The very aluminum skin is peeling off to reveal some disgusting, grainy white stuff.
And the backside of the handle is covered in rust, or something very similar to rust. It squeaks something awful when it's operated.

How can I restore this otherwise fine handle to it's former, shiny glory?
Thanks for your time!

The handle is plated pot metal. The problem with ours is some of the plating remained, and I kept slcing y fingers open on the sharp edges of the platong. I used a cookie wheel to scuff off the corrosion and make the handle smooth again on ours. I then primed and painted the handle with silver Rustoleum.

Thank you very much for the reply! That explains it, but what is a cookie wheel?
