Exclamation Door locking after being slammed shut

This past weekend while on a Fathers Day outting in my 25'Excella...before going to the playground someone slammed the door...with the keys inside...and the door locked. Has anyone ever had their door lock after being shut abruptly. We had to go in thru a window that was fortunately unlocked. The lock latch apparantly was not all the way to the right when the door was closed and it slipped into LOCK! Lesson learned: always keep a spare door key in the tow vehicle..

YMMV

Locking the keys in or losing them has always been a fear of mine. keep spare keys available outside the trailer at all times.

I found that I couldn't get suitable key blanks locally, even at a major lock shop, and had to purchase them from the Airstream dealer.

Same thing happened to me in my Bambi about a month ago. Closed the door, wife and I sat around campfire for an hour or so, then when it was time for bed, the door was locked. A few moments of panic as we were in the mountains and it was kind of late and getting a bit cold. Fortunately, I had the keys to my Rover, and a second set of keys for the Bambi in the Rover. Whew! Lucky.

When we bought our 1998 Excella 1000, the owners cautioned us about the deadbolt located above the door lock lever. If the deadbolt is extended even a little bit when closing the door, there is a possibility of having the deadbolt engage. Keys aren't the issue when this happens! On one occasion, they had to crawl through the rear storage compartment and lift the queen bed to access the inside (a job for a small person)! For door locking accidents, both of us have a trailer door key and we have a spare in the truck.

Me too . . .

I had a similar experience and was glad I happened to have the keys in my pocket. After that I put a spare set in a magnetic hide-a-key box in a special place on the frame. Did the same thing for the tow vehicle after scouring the trailer and the campground for its keys!
