Door lock on my Bubble

My 58 Bubble has the referigerator type door handle. It still functions to open and close but the locking mechanism is all messed up. I took it to a locksmith but they could not find a cylinder that would work. Unfortunately, the PO installed a latch on the outside of the door to lock up the trailer. I will be removing the latch but need to know if there is any hope of salvaging this door handle. If there is no way to repair the lock than I will have to have an alternative method of locking while I am away. Any suggestions are much appreciated. thanks

These locks are not replaceable. I've got one on mine and the lock is good, but the outside locking cylinder is long gone. That outside refrigerator handle is cast and they tend to break eventually. If the lock itself is good and you have good inside and outside handles - I would keep looking. A lot of us are using locking latches as an extra measure to keep the door from flying open. On my 59 I mounted a latch on bottom of the door - so its kinda out of the way.

On my 58 I'm going to try to install a standard lockset - I know the purists will cringe, but it should work fine.

I've notice on your many recent posts you refer to your airstream as your bubble. A lot. Was this the model name, or just something you call it? What is the interior lay out like?

Bubble is the actual model for this Airstream. However, there is some confusion about the year of "my Bubble". Mt title says 1958 Bubble but in all the research I've done the Bubble was only made from 55 to 57. I'm not sure if the title is wrong or if I just got one of the last ones made. You can view a 1957 @ This California edition is basically identical to my Bubble including the floorplan. If anyone out there has more info on this subject I would be stoked.
