Question Door lock for 1967 Caravel?

Have some old posts regarding Bargman L100, but nothing recent. I have a fair condition Caravel with just an opening for the door lock.

What will fit it? Does not have to be authentic.

Appreciate your kind response. Bill

Hello from Colorado: I had the Bargman lock on my 66 Trade Wind and my son's 69 Globe Trotter. The Bargman lock is no longer made. There are some Airstream Forums participants who overhaul these old locks. Montana Blue comes to mind. PM him and see what he can do.

I replaced my son's Bargman lock with an old KT lock. I'm not sure I made an improvement, but the Bargman didn't work, and the KT does work for now.

The trouble with the 60s trailers is that big cast aluminum door frame. The Bargman needs a 3 1/2" lock bolt which is a rare item. I don't know of an after market lock with such a long lock bolt.

Thank you for your help. I don't have any lock on my Caravel. I may have to do some surgery on the door and see IF I can make something. I can work with metal fabrication, but am hoping there could be a replacement.

I will reach out to montanablue.

I replaced the KT lock on my 75 Overlander with a Korhee standard RV lock. The Overlander doesn't have the cast aluminum door frame. The Korhee lockset doesn't have a very long lockbolt. But I made it work.

David, I am thinking about fabrication like you did. This may be my best bet. Thank you for responding. I will take a look at my door. It needs to be very solid. If my door is extra secure since it could come open in transit that the wind would blow it open and slam it into the body. This would be very bad!

I think Airstream went with "suicide" doors that open into the wind due to the window in the front, and the awning supports in the way. Anyway, having your door blow open on the highway is a bad thing. It has happened to many of us including me. A trailer must have a deadbolt lock engaged to prevent vibrations from releasing the door latch. The Korhee has this built in.

When I installed the new Korhee lock, I first examined and measured how long the lockbolt has to be to get good engagement with the door frame. I do know the sixties trailers had the cast door frame that was quite thick, and the Bargman lock had a 3 1/2 "setback" from the center of the door knob to the outside of the door frame.

David, My Caravel is at our secondary home and don't know lock dimensions. But here is a 5-inch backset (overall) I wonder if this would be close to our Airstream lock.

I think my best bet is the Korhee you mentioned.

Well I'll be. I didn't know this existed. Maybe there are other lengths also. You will have to measure up your Caravel door frame with the old lockset out of the door and see what might be possible. I don't know if a Korhee lockset would work. But maybe you will find something that will.

Montanablue might be able to help also.

David, I am buying one and see if it fits. They have both a deadbolt as well a lockset. I really like the Kwikset with Smart Key.

I'm betting you will make it work. The door knob will look a little farther away from the edge of the door. But that is better than no door lockset at all.
