'65 Safari Door Knob

We need to replace the lockset on our 65 Safari. The strike is worn so bad that the door will not close tightly. I have taken it apart and it looks like a standard 5" backset. Has anyone had any luck replacing these with a standard household 5" backset?

Thanks for your help.

Vintage Trailer Supply has the "Long Striker" for the L100 lock. That lock is obsolete these days so if you need the whole mechanism, be prepared to pay $ if you find one.

StPierre, take a look at this thread.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f453...tml#post859625

Both of my 65's originally came with a Weiser lockset, 3 3/4" backset, typical, I believe, for the 65's and for this one year only. I replaced the lockset and deadbolt on my Tradewind as described in the thread - haven't had any problems since. I never did get pictures taken.

Good Luck,
Marion

I didnt have the Bargman lockset on my 65. I had a different knob from the dead bolt. I lucked out and found a replacement at a locksmith. the door knob is a modified house door knob (it was original) and the dead bolt was Wineman I believe. Post a pic of what you have.

The "Chesler" lock is very similar to the Bargman L 100 & better quality. They both fit in the same hole.

Below are 2 pictures of the door knob. It is a 5" backset. Can anyone ID the lock? Would you know of a like replacement? As always, thank you.

You have the same lock set as I do. The dead bolt is a company called Weslock. I cant remember the name of the knob off hand but I will check it this weekend. My buddy Kenny P turned me on to an old school locksmith that just so happened to have the guts new in box, Score!! You will have to remove the dead bolt and knob and carefully measure the length of the guts to the strker plate. Check my thread and/or blog I may have some pics. You can check some locksmiths in your area that would be your best bet. I will look for the locksmith info this weekend, maybe he could help. Dont buy the lockset off VTS they wont work for you trust me!!

We found a Kwikset strike with a 5 inch offset and installed it with a new knob , and with a little adjustment it worked great. Hopefully Marzboy can help with deadbolt, and another step done. Thanks for all the help, Maurice

Hi Maurice here is the info on the locksmith.
Kennedy lock and safe

The guy that ownes the place is an old school locksmith. Tell him that you have a 1965 airstream and a guy with the same year trailer came in and bought a Weslock dead bolt mecinism and a Weisner door knob mecinism at the end of august 2012.
Let me know how it goes!

Sorry about that, it was a bit of work to find what I wanted. If I can help let me know. Maybe you should check out the vintage trailer show at Modernism week in Palm Springs at the end of February. Maybe you can show your lock to someone there. Uwe from Area 63 is usually there, nice guy with a lot of knowledge.

We finished the lock set. I was able to replace the original with a standard Kwikset. I did have to order a 5" backset dead bolt and strike. With a little modification it installed easily. As you can see we had great results.
