I’d suggest checking reviews and testing in QST magazine. I’m a Yaesu and Icom products dude personally.

I have several friends that love it. I have their QRP KX2 and two of their amps and love them. I also have a deposit in place for the K4 coming this spring.

That said, I am also quite happy with my IC-7300 which is substantially less expensive than the K3S.

You might check Rob Sherwood’s radio test results. Google Sherwood Engineering.

Elecraft service support is outstanding.

Hi

A lot depends on what you are trying to do. The G90 reviewed in this month's QST is an alternative ....

Hi

The radio is:

https://www.radioddity.com/products/...hf-transceiver

Review is the "March 2020" entry on this page:

http://www.arrl.org/reviews-listed-by-issue

There are a number of pretty good YouTube videos on it as well.

If you can't get to the review (QST likes you to pay $$$$), the quick summary is that it is a pretty good radio for carry it around sort of use. I'd say it's a bit heavy for a backpack, but fine to carry in your Airstream.

If you can wait for the Icom 705 to come out, that would be on my list of things to check out as well.

https://www.icomamerica.com/en/produ...5/default.aspx

If a "big radio" is what you are after, the Icom-7610 has done very well for me. I simply find anything that big a bit of an issue in the trailer. Smaller is better .... (The K3 is similar in size to the 7610). If you will be operating outdoors, there is the "rainstorm" issue. The loss of a $500 radio is a bit easier to deal with than loosing one at 5 to 10X that price ...

A somewhat easier to search listing for QST reviews is at:

http://www.arrl.org/reviews-listed-by-manufacturer#E

The original K3 review is in 2008 and the K3s is in 2016.

I've heard 1050-1200 $ US, and a guess for release is the Dayton Hamfest in May.

These are both guesses, and are quite likely wrong.

I'm contemplating the philosophical implications of a modern HF/VHF/UHF radio without some digital mode like DStar or YSF. I don't have an answer. I have several answers, just not _an_ answer :-)

Hi

As far as I know that's the only way to get at the reviews. They don't share them out to the world.

Hi

The "all in one with a battery built in" is (at least to me) a compelling argument in favor of the 705 as a "camping radio". You can check things out without a whole lot of hassle. If the bands are open / noise is low, you can go ahead and start putting up real antennas.

Various dealers will sell you a "reservation" on the 705. Just what that actually gets you is a bit unclear. In some cases one guy gets a boatload in while all the rest seem to still be waiting for a shipment to arrive.

I've had the K3/P3 since 2014 and would recommend it with no hesitation. Elecraft's support is probably the best in the industry and they're constantly improving their product. The improvements to the K3S maybe worthwhile if you're a serious DXer or contester, but probably not worth it if you're a rag chewer. You might find better value picking up a used K3. You can always upgrade the K3 to be equivalent in performance to the K3S.

I haven't been keeping up with their latest offerings, but the K4 looks amazing. Let us know what you think of it when you get it. I'm pretty sure you're going to love it.

Hold off on jumping on the 705. There are a few nits that will affect its use in the field, lack of ATU and the bad glare issue are two of those. The plastic case will need a little time to find out how strong it really is. If you using it on a picnic table, those three issues are pretty big.
