A sat phone as a backup

Like most, iv’e been to places without any cell availability. Anyone with experience with a satellite phone as a backup? On my yachting years we had one that was reasonably priced but a quick search now comes out only with subscription plans that are very pricy and billed monthly, used or not.

I used a sat phone for backup up until about 4 months ago (mine was a portable one I also used in an airplane).

I didn’t like it. In any amount of foliage it struggled. Pretty much had to sit completely still for it to work. Never had that issue in the plane, but I had an external antenna.

Now I use a Garmin personal emergency tracker device that also does texting. Much more economical plans, and I don’t really like talking on the phone anyway!

I use the Garmin too. Relatively inexpensive compared to a satellite phone and it lets you text.
