The bad news is that stinks. The good news is that it's pretty much what Verizon said they would do. I agree, this plan is no good.

84 GB and rolling this billing cycle (month 4...) on this plan. The work around was given earlier in this thread.

There is no "work around". They are rolling out the 10 GB Jetpack caps across the country and will soon affect everyone. I actually got a message from Verizon saying I was approaching, then hit my 10 GB cap. It is only a matter of time for all Verizon "unlimited" users.

Oh, and when you do hit the cap it is so slow you basically have no internet. Calling this crap "unlimited" is the con of the century.

Your right, I didn't hit the 10 GB limit 2 months ago and my download speeds aren't 15 Mbps right now. I hate Verizon just as much as everyone else here. The difference is I decided not to let them win. The glass can either be half full or half empty, the choice is yours.

It wouldn't be so bad if say they capped you at 3 MBit / sec. Their cap makes it so slow you can't even check email some of the time. That is ridiculous after only 10 GB usage.

What if you had a tablet on its own unlimited plan or is this just for smartphones? Figured I could just Airplay Netflix from the iPad to the Apple TV connected to my TV.

The 10GB limit is just for hotspot use. If you are using your phone as a hotspot and are throttled after 10gb, when you use the phone without hotspot you are returned to full speed?

On Ebay I found businesses "renting out" their true unlimited data sim cards. So for $135 / month I'll insert the sim card into my Jetpack to get real unlimited data. So including my regular phone, I'll be spending upwards of $250 in total on phone and internet. But not worrying about these stupid caps all the time is worth it to me.

It's the whole unlimited plan. All devices limited to 10Gb

I have become confused as this discussion goes on. According to Verizon's web site https://www.verizonwireless.com/plans/verizon-plan/ the 10GB rule applies only to tethering or mobile hotspot. For phones, it says that after 22GB per line they may "prioritize" your data behind other Verizon customers during network congestion but it is supposed to be 4G LTE. To see this statement in the previous link, expand the question mark beside the "Unlimited Data" line in the description of the Unlimited plan.
Their FAQ states, "Most of the time customers will enjoy the same great network experience once they exceed 22GB during a billing cycle. If you've already used 22GB on a particular line during your current billing cycle and you're on a cell site that is congested at that moment, your download may be temporarily queued behind other Verizon Wireless customers, which may result in slightly slower download speeds."

So if you use a piece of software that fools the phone (and Verizon) into thinking that you are not tethering when you really are........

.... you'd be violating the terms of service. If you care about those things. And oh, they can tell. They may choose to ignore it unless you become a problem for their network, but they can tell.

I found nothing in the terms of service about this. If you could post a link? As far as "they can tell" goes, if they knew I would be throttled to 3G right?

Will Verizon not allow you to set up a separate account on another device even though you currently have a shared account with a couple of phones? Say have an account with just a couple of phones and just have a 2g shared plan and then on a separate unlimited plan have an iPad. As long as the accounts are not linked together you should be good as long as you don't tether. Maybe its too expensive to do this.

An update:

My Jetpack is a paperweight at over 10 GB and the internet barely even functions.

My phone as a "tether" is at 32 GB (22 GB "soft cap"), and has slowed considerably. I can definitely tell my transmissions are de-prioritized.

I get my new business "real unlimited" sim in tomorrow and will report over the next few weeks.

My new business real unlimited doing much better than my "hotspot/tether" unlimited from my phone after 22GB. That was throttled pretty good. Too bad Verizon put that measly 10 GB hard-cap on Jetpack's.

Just got off a chat with a Verizon sales rep and talked about the unlimited plan.

Once 10g of hotspot data is reached in a monthly cycle then all the devices on that account are throttled even if the hotspot is not used again.

If you keep your hotspot under 10g then your other devices: phones and tablets will be able to use full LTE speeds up to the 22g prioritization limit.

If you have the unlimited and use a hotspot now and then and don't reach the 10g limit is that what you are observing?

Ya the new "unlimited" plan is a joke. 10 GB on a hotspot? I go through that in a day or two.

I believe the rep was wrong.

On the Verizon website for unlimited it states once the 10g limit for hotspot data is reached only it is throttled the data going directly to phones and tablets shouldn't be. So my idea would be to use a cellular equipped iPad with BT keyboard as the main computing device. The computer is mainly for editing photos and videos which doesn't need a network connection. I'll find public wifi to download OSX updates while on the road for the computer. We should be able to stream Netflix occasionally from the iPad and display via wireless to Apple TV connected to the TV.

Kelvin

I have a hotspot and phone. My hotspot drops speed when it hits 10 gb but that does not affect the phone.

And the hotspot functions well enough for me to surf the web after the 10gb limit. It's really not that bad.

The previously available plan that we have with Verizon gives us 16GB/mo with rollover data for $40 less per month. So far, we're getting along well enough with that. Similarly, we don't download iOS or MacOS updates unless we're on wi-fi somewhere. We also don't stream video, as that would demolish our data limit if we did. DVD's still work, and we bring a few along for when nothing else will do. When VZW finally gets its act together to offer an unlimited plan that includes hot spots, we'll be there, ready to chat with them about that plan.
