Strange Satellite Dish Behavior; Fix the simple thing first
In 2018 I bought a Winegard G-3 carryout w/ 2, 50' coaxial cables. One for the TV cable box signal in the kitchen and one for the cable box in the bedroom. Everything worked the way it's supposed to until this summer. All of sudden I noticed that the dish seek for satellites time began to increase, but was still locking on and we had a picture. Then, after our travels we took the AS back to the warehouse for storage. The warehouse storage has an additional benefit, I can plug in AC to keep the the batteries charge. However, I didn't pay much attention to the fact that when plugged in the power to the cable boxes and the power inserter are also powered up in the closed cabinet. So the units cooked for several summer months. Next trip the dish hardly worked at all. It would move sporadically and occasionally find a signal or not. I suspected it was toast. Bought another G-3, redesigned, new and improved. Yeah, right. Set it up w/ new power inserter, same cable box using the new 25" coaxial cable that came with it. Bingo, perfect first time. Then switched to the old dual 50" coaxial cables. Bingo picture in kitchen and bedroom. Well fixed that right? Nope. Cause the next time I went to set up I used the old dual coaxial cables and the new dish couldn't find the satellites. It seems that because the coaxial contacts were corroded they couldn't carry enough power to the satellite motor to make it turn. Solution: Bought new cables (gold plated) and some quality contact cleaner. Moral of story fix the simple thing first, saves on the aggravation.
