Alternates to AT&T on Airstream Connect

We invested in Airstream Connect a couple of years ago and frankly are very disappointed with the signal speed we are getting with AT&T. We have travelled all over the West and Southeast and at best the signal and download speed is sub par. We end up using our Verizon hotspots and burning through our data. I'm told that it is possible to reconfigure for Verizon or other carriers. Looking for confirmation and advice. Will be discussing with Airstream when we return later this month.

Hi

We get very good connect speeds from AT&T pretty much everywhere in the country. We don't use the Airstream Connect stuff, that (rather than AT&T may be the issue.

Maybe consider the new ATT Nighthawk hot spot?

https://www.airforums.com/forums/f45...-a-222129.html

. . . and drop the Airstream Connect entirely?

Could be "Carrier Aggregation"

Your problems with AT&T Connect might have more to do with the category of the modem in the router rather than AT&T.

Does your modem(i.e. router) support Band 14?
AT&T seems to be pushing quite a bit of data connections on band 14.

What category modem is in your router. It could be limiting the amount of carrier aggregation it supports. A good Carrier Aggregation connection is Well-Above-Par.

As Peter points out: the AT&T Nighthawk works great.

Are you still on the $360/year unlimited AT&T Plan? We have a few more months on that plan, but because it is on an older modem, we end sometimes not even turning on that modem, and instead use the 100G/$55 Nighthawk Modem.

Activating Verizon on an older modem will not necessarily get all that much better performance as compared to getting a newer modem. Pepwave sells several that have better modem and would be a fairly simple router upgrade in your Airstream connect.

Be careful sinking too much money into any router(i.e. Modem) these days. 5G is here and modems are quickly catching up........Equally and perhaps more important: Antenna are adding 5G support very quickly. Too much is changing right now to sink much money in a solution. It is changing too fast.

A near term solution is to buy the hotspots from AT&T, VzW & T-Mobile, and wait for the router vendors to catch up.

I also use the AT&T plan with the Nighthawk and have not had any issues.

Did you disable WiFI as WAN?

That would double your throughput potentially.

See Turk123's extensive thread on why disabling WiFi as WAN is so important on that router.

Alternates to AT&T on Airstream Connect

Starlink will be the game changer. EOY should allow for mobile use vs. fixed gel-location. 100MB download and very healthy upload is being reported. $100/mo.

There is simply no mobile LTE / cellular data plan offered today that comes close to what starlink offers from a speed and data usage perspective.

rvmobileinternet.com is your friend for researching all things data / internet for mobile / RV applications.

Our AT&T history:

1. We had the AT&T Wireless Internet for $108/mo (including taxes) with a 100GB limit.
2. We switched to Airstream Connect in May 2019 and were able to renew for a second year; this ran out in May 2021.
3. We switched to the new AT&T Wireless Internet for $55/mo (prepaid plan) with a 100GB limit. We tried to use our old hotspot but had to spend $250 to purchase a new Nighthawk - as the old hotspot is no longer supported.

The new plan is working fine for us as we travel about the US.

Hope this helps!

Just researched using rvmobileinternet.com and got the Cricket (ATT network) $55 100g month plan. Worked great on a trip through Texas, NM and CO. The mobile hotspot device is a lot less expensive than the Netgear device. Don't buy from Netgear's website. They claim they provide free 2nd day shipping but sent mine by ground. It was too late for our trip. Now they won't refund. I went to Cricket and it was setup on the spot.

ATT Connect was only a marketing term used by Airstream to sell introductory data plans for ATT. The modem used by and in Airstreams is a pepwave that is housed in a cabinet in my Classic. You can use any modem you want to connect to cellular. ATT still doesn’t have the saturation coverage Verizon does on the West Coast but ATT does on the east coast. However, we use both ATT and Verizon for those times when one or the other doesn’t work. I would stay patient and wait for Starlink if you find cellular inadequate.
