What's playing on your 8-track...

...Our 78 Ambassador came with the 'Deluxe' Stereo, which included the 'state-of-the-art' 8-track cartridge tape player...

I recently found my cache of old 8-tracks, among which was the sound track from the movie, PAINT YOUR WAGON...

Lest you Argosy owners out there think that Paint Your Wagon is an homage to your 'painted' metal covered wagons - It's actually a movie about the exploits of a couple of gold miners during the 1800's in a remote gold mining camp...Starring Clint Eastwood & Lee Marvin.... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064782/

If you haven't been exposed to this movie, it's an entertaining flick with some fun twists as all the miners deal with life in their remote 'diggins'...The sound track is a 'hoot' with Clint & Lee actually 'crooning' a couple of songs!...It's NOT your typical kind of Broadway Musical - not that there's anything wrong with that!...

More 8-track rhetoric...I'm sure many of you are asking how I came to actually acknowledge owing a couple dozen of these slide-in dinosaurs...

Years ago, we bought a new 1977, 25' class C MoHo on a ford 1-ton chassis (460 eng & C6 Trans) to cart our young family of four around the Western States during vacation outings....

In my wisdom of the moment, I opted for the MoHo be equipped with a state-of-the-art 8-track stereo for our enjoyment...the collection of 'tapes' soon followed...Neil diamond, Paul Anka, Johnny Cash, glen Campbell - the list goes on...

The 8-track on Paint Your Wagon's sound track quickly became our family's favorite as we rolled into a new camp or boondock site...Our 7yr old daughter and 4yr old son came to know they were soon to be loose to roam around camp (are we there yet?) when the PYW theme reverberated inside the MoHo!

I have to admit that PYW music is also loaded on our ipod, and after all these years is still our family's favorite 'call to camp' music up the Sierra's each summer...These days, the grand kids have been getting initiated in this family 'tradition'...We've been known to stomp up a bit of dust around camp, as the main PYW theme wafts from our portable 'noise box'...

I marvel as things come around full circle - we bought our MoHo new in 77 for about $17K, with AC Genny, etc...One year before our 'current' AS was built (1978) - and if memory serves, the original owner also paid about the same, $16-17K...

With our 'new' AS, we're able to enjoy all those old MoHo 8-track tapes again - Who knew what that Stereo option would mean to us, 35 years later!

Our TV, a '71 Buick convertible, has an 8 track. My meager collection includes 'The Sound Around You', which is a collection of music from 1971. The tape cassett was included with the 8 track if you purchased that option in the car. I also have a Sunny and Cher from then also.

Neil.

I have lived too long: First it was 78's, then 33's and 45's, then reel to reel tape, and next was 8 track, followed by cassett tapes, then CD's then MP3's, then my hearing went and it is all quiet again.

AM only radios, then AM/FM, then AM/FM stereo, then satellite.

Quiet is good. Grin.

Yes, I still have a couple of boxes of 8 tracks also. Nothing to play them in anymore.

The only auto I had with an 8 track was the 79 Cordoba which was at the end of the 8 track era.

Got ya...In my video, you can just see the input adapter for our XmRadio to use the 8-track's stereo/speakers - a much better way to play some 'tunes', these days...

All these 8 trackers have to get into the 20th century. Sal.

I remember

Back in the day, My friend had a Sony ( DC 8 ??? ) 8 track Recorder. He was able to make customized mixes of music when none of us could. I figure it's a must for anyone still using the vintage format

Actually before the 8 track, Lear made a 4 track player and the tape cartridges were about 10" x 10". Very hard to store those puppies!

We had a 70 Skylark convertible with a OEM under dash 8 track. Sure miss that old ragtop.

My folks Silver Streak had an outstanding LEAR AM/FM/FM-stereo 8-track. The radio tuning sections, especially AM, was far better than is what is available today.

Good enough, too, for Elvis.

I only have one 8-track which seems appropriate since I'm only 29. However, strange since I've owned 2 vehicles that had an 8-track player.
Not sure what all that means, but I've got Neil Diamond's Crackin' Rosie.....like a GEE-tar hummin'.
