Hey all,


Just put a car receiver/cd player in my 1969 ambassador. Three out of the 4 speakers work! But they don't sound so great. After 40 years of sitting around I'm surprised they work at all. The back speakers are 4x6s and I think all stick with that. But the front speakers are set in the fiberglass end cap. It's pretty large opening so I could fit a 5x7, 6.75" round, and I might be able to wiggle in a 4x10. I don't know for sound quality what would be best, so I'm looking for ideas.. What have others done in the past?

I put kicker speakers in mine, they sound great. Alpine is the way to go but they can be pricey.

If the back speakers are wall mount measure carefully as you don't have a lot of depth to work with.

Polk audio 5x7 db or dxi series sound great. Just make sure you seal up around the speakers.

Sorry to be ignorant, but why seal around the speaker?

Speakers especially car speakers need a sealed enclosure to produce full range sound. I had to make a cut out to fit the speaker into the rectangular opening. An use rubber foam seal to between the speaker and the housing. And seal the housing an the speaker plate I had to cut out. I don't recommend the 6x9 3 ways they are too bright of a speaker and the will need more power to sound good. My 5x7's have plenty of bass an good full range sound. They would not have any bass if I did jot seal them up.

As long as they will fit in your application they should sound great.

Would sealing them into the end cap be enough, or should I build a small box to put the in, and the slide the box into the end cap?

The stereo puts out up to 45 watts per leg. Don't know if that would be enough for a 6x9.

Ignorance may be bliss,, but the original speakers in my 70s trailers still sound good to me.

Mine just went in the endcap, right where the originals were. That will act as an enclosure in its own right.

That output should be plenty, see what the speakers are rated for.

I was really surprised it find that they worked at all, but if you turn up sound they sound garbled. I figure the cones are shot.

Sealing speakers doesn't matter so much on mids and highs, but makes a difference in low bass response.
Just having them bolted down improves the sound tremendously.
The rubber gasket already attached to the basket is a good enough seal.
The new trailers have good sound systems.
Sony car stereo, (2) 6 1/2" coaxials in the front, (2) 6 1/2" coaxials in the back, and a SAS 8" powered sub under the couch.
iPod, bluetooth, Blu-ray, and everything.
