Replacing original Sensar antenna

Help me understand this..What does the wall plate on my 91 Excella actually do? The light comes on when switched but not reading any voltage from the coax connection, is it supposed to?
My Batwing looks like it was amplified?
Anyway my goal is to replace since it was in rough shape, leaking AND when layed down on roof it interferes with the bedroom vent cover, was thinking to buy a new unit and cut an inch off the two boom sections. would go with with a King or Rayzar fixed unit but hate the modern look and don't watch TV anyway.

The wall plate has several functions:
When the pushbutton is pressed so that the LED is illuminated, it provides power to the preamp mounted in the antenna head through the cable to the antenna. No power should come out of the coax jack on the front panel under any circumstances.

Also when the LED is illuminated the signal from the antenna is routed to the splitter which feeds the front panel coax jack and the coax line(s) feeding other coax jacks in the trailer.

When the LED is not illuminated, the signal from the external cable system jack is routed to the splitter.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't shorten the square tubes that hold the antenna up as long as the antenna still retracts into the bracket on the roof.

Thanks Al My 91 does not have an external coax connection, just the antenna to the wall plate and from there to the bedroom wall plate coax.
I guess I wont worry too much about the wall plate and just replace the roof top antenna and hope for the best, as I said we dont watch tv (when camping) anyway but I do want things to work as they should regardless.
