I wired in the Samsung DVD player for audio via the TV. I like CarPlay and the streamlined looks of this pioneer head unit....

Always double DIN.

Also went with a slightly higher end polk speaker set - MM1 series.

They only downside is that it doesn’t have HD radio for some reason... but I mainly listen to music via my phone.
Nice looking unit. Mind me asking why this over one of their NEX models? I hadn't noticed this unit on their website before. It seems to have all the functionality other than, as you say, HD radio.

Are the MM1 series a big step up?

Thanks

Out with the old, in with the new (Audio Visual upgrade)

The main reason was that I didn’t need DVD functionality and I preferred the design as it’s more sleek and tablet-esque vs the older looking double-DIN units in the pioneer lineup.

It had all the parameters i needed / wanted (with the exception of HD radio for some odd reason) including the advanced touch screen and most importantly the digital/analog input/outputs I needed.

I see now that there is a 1400MEX that seems to be the same unit as the app radio. Im not sure what the difference is frankly.

Pioneer product and marketing need some help [emoji4] they seem to have a dozen models that do the same thing [emoji4]

Regarding the MM1 - big step up from the stock junk speakers but I’d say an evolution over the previous Polk units I had described above in this thread. The biggest (final) issue that I still need to address is the low end and I plan to install a new, proper 10” or 12” subwoofer vs the crummy 8” stock one I still have. That should round things out nicely.

You are so right about Pioneer. I called a shop on Friday that only specializes in Pioneer and Kenwood. They were confused which was which and why so many with virtually the same features.

I looked at a 1400 and there was no aux audio input.
We need that aux in for our TV audio.

There is a Pioneer AVH-X491BHS that does have HD radio but does not have carplay.

Ah - yes you do need aux in and car play is handy if you are an Apple person. I’d recommend the DA120 ..... has been working like a charm.... and it’s aesthetically pleasing....

Emulator info

Hey Wulfraat,

Really nice post. I’m about to try and match your work on my 27FB FC. going with the Pioneer AVH-X390BS, so should be similar. One thing I can’t find real easy is the on-off-on signal emulator you describe in step 6. Can you PM that or post it back to the thread? Thanks again!

Sure thing, just search "AVH-X390BS Microbypass" on amazon. $14 solves the issue:

https://www.amazon.com/MicroBypass-A...-X390BS+bypass

These are Pioneer model specific. The one above is the one you want for the 390BS..... (AVH-X compatible)

Thats a nice head unit - I had a similar one in my 25'. Worked well. I have since moved to a Pioneer AppRadio 4 in my 30'.... (model SPH-DA120)

GREAT job! Loved seeing what you did. Currently selling my FC and moving into a Classic, but based on the statement, alone, "I didn't know what I was missing!" am planning on addressing audio first thing. Thanks for sharing all the hard work.

FWIW - I've always wanted B&W Audio and have never pulled the trigger - perhaps this the reason to do just that. https://www.bowerswilkins.com/custom...ation/marine-6

wulfraat, Thank you so much for this guide. I know how much time it takes. I have a headache looking for a better receiver in 2021, but I can't find one. I can still find the one you recommended on e-bay, but before I pull the trigger, do you know of a better one today?

Thank you so much!

For the airstream unless you go absolutely wild with $$$ all the receivers in this price range will more or less perform the same driving four 6.5” speakers and 1 basic sub.

The airstream is not a great acoustic environment, generally speaking.

I still like the double DIN for its ease of use touch screen... Apple CarPlay is great too. Most of the time I Bluetooth from my phone.

If I were to do it all over again for a third time I would probably install a permanent iPad screen perhaps, with an amp for audio to drive the speakers... screen would double for other in-trailer controls like my Victron energy platform... but alas... the pioneer double DIN works fine for audio from my phone too [emoji4]
