How do you remove a factory stereo?

Hi guys,

I have a 1986 29' Sovereign. It appears to have the stock 1986 Pioneer car stereo (cassette player no less) in it. I would like to remove it and put in a newer cd/mp3 player. It is up in the front with the control panel I really don't want to break anything as I take the old stereo out, so are there any tricks in removing the old stereo?

Post some pictures, they are really not that hard to remove but it would help to see what you have. I did mine in the '03 CCD in 30 minutes.


BTW - Lots of car stereo dealers will replace the stereo at no charge if you buy a model of a certain price range - Circuit City wants you to buy one of $100 or more. Had them do my wifes Toyota several weeks back - it was more for the dash replacement kt but your AS will not need that. The pigtail in the box will work - all AS does is use crimp connectors. My wires were labeled, you may need to do some looking in your owners manual first.

I changed mine out in my 86 32' Excella. It was not difficult just go slow. Remove every screw you can find!! The black box that holds the stereo that is located between the tambor doors has a few sorta hidden ones as I recall. When all the screws are removed the center of the interiour end cap will have enough flex to remove the black box that houses the stereo, Label the wires before you remove the unit- I'm guessing you have fwd and aft speakers, makes installing the new unit easier.The problem I now have is that there is not a fresh air inlet to cool the player, when I play a cd upon removal it is quite hot. Like Hot man HOT. So I leave the tambor doors open, I'll be installing a computor fan in the near future.Hope this helps, ey

I replaced the one in our Sovereign. It was not hard. You'll have two wires for each speaker, a ground wire, an two power wires. One power wire is main power, the other is memory.

I brought my '89 to Circuit City. It was free installation with purchase. They replaced the stereo and four speakers. I was baffled at how to pull the old one out. It looked like they built the trailer around the stereo. CC did an excellent job. Probably depends upon who the installer of the day is.
